G'day, > No one refers to the People's Republic While not military, I've seen a fair few people from various countries keep the initials of the untranslated form of their country or institution. OK this is in science and sport mind you and the group who did it the most consistently are people from the countries which used to make up the Soviet Union. It may well be their alphabet is similar enough to ours (letter shape wise) that changing the letters is an uncalled for expense. Cheers Beth

> Sorry, there was 'posed to be arabic script on the post. After more thought (found another grey cell to thump against the first one), I was thinking that the abbreviation for the Islamic Federation Navy should just be IFN -- if you're going to put it in Roman characters you may as well translate it as well. No one refers to the People's Republic of China the ZRG even though it would transliterate as Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo. (well, Sun Microsystems does abbreviate "Chinese" as "zh"...no one

I ansewered this offline but felt I should also answer here. the script in the translation box is arabic [read from right to left] when I copied the line to my e-mail window it was IDed as ARIAL (ARABIC) [TT] courier new [TT] also seems to work سÙÙÙØ© اÙاتÙØاد اÙإسÙا٠ÙÙ I don't know why, it shows up okay in the message I am sending out. maybe because I have unicode enabled?
