(Apologies if this turns up twice, my outgoing mail seems to be behaving
oddly.)

OK, I think I have a better understanding of the non-linearity
problem now.

Suppose a ship can only be attacked by the fighters of one carrier in any
turn?

Rationale would be that since all the fighters are buzzing about in the same
small volume of space, it takes some pretty good command & control and
training not to shoot each other. (In the current US Navy, do strikes ever mix
fighters from more than one carrier?)

I don't think we've ever had that situation occur with the current US Navy.
But back in WWII, remember Midway. Both sides.

I read an article in the NIP Proceedings a couple of years back with joint
Naval Air / Air Force training mission. Basically, the carriers
provided fighter cover and EW support for B1B's. This was a combination of
land based air and carrier air. If you can do that with USAF and USN, the USN
should certainly be able to do joint carrier strikes.
