John Owen of House Simeon defeated Aaron Teske of House Tuffley in the first
round of the tournament. House Simeon will advance to the second round and
compete
against the victor of the House Agrippa-House Delafield match.

While I'm not Jon, I figure I can safely say that you more-or-less are
locked out. One of the ideas behind the tournament is that we don't know what
our opponent is using, and if Jon gives out details of the battles immediately
after they've finished, then the next people to fight will know what their
opponents are capable of. (Maybe not direct stats, but things like speed,
which ships have heavy beam complements, general tactics, etc., which may be
even worse to give out....)

Once the second round is done, half of the first round fights (the ones where
both people are out of the tourney) can be unlocked; after the third round a
few more may be unlocked. The rest'll have to wait for the last fights to
finish.

OTOH, I think I can safely say that I'm one of the pulse torp fleets that
failed to reach the second round; while I wasn't totally dependant on the
things (I wanted to use 'em for crossing the first threshold, and hopefully
dropping a shield & making things easier on my beam weapons) they did
*nothing*. Well, not quite, but they certainly had no meaningful impact on the
battle. (Having all six shots of my first
salvo miss, even with some 3+ and 4+ shots, didn't help at all....)

You just weren't shooting at me, Aaron. If you had, I'm *sure* you would have
nailed me with 5 out of 6 pulse torps every turn, even out to range 30.

Aaron is correct. The tactics and plans of the individual fleet commanders is
confidential information. The skill in a good fleet commander is having a good
plan and adjusting to the circumstances
that the opponent presents. The tournament is run in a double-blind
fashion with limited intelligence, so admirals only have ship class and
position, course, and speed information, and given the ability of the weasel
systems, even that may not be as they seem.

In the last tournament, the publically available information of the final
round was available from the Web site. You'll be able to see the fleets and
tactics that defeated three opponents to reach the final round when the
present tournament reaches the final round. It may not be interesting to the
outside world, but I can imagine the thrill and suspense of the fleet
commanders.

Aaron, Thank you for the reply, I guess I'll just have to wait. I am one of
those people who likes to inspect the order of battle and predict the outcome.
(Die rolling can however mess up the best estimate.) Strangely enough I didn't
consider that anyone would look
at another players fleet. During a game I normally keep track
whats going on turn by turn, noting reduced volume of fire, loss of turning
ability ect. Needless to say, sensors do not play a large part in these
battles. (Nor does ECM)

Bye for now,

Jon, Thank you for the reply. You will more than likely have seen the note to
Aaron, this is a small extension of that note. It was a blind spot on my
thinking. How could I not think
of weasel ships? (I am currently driving some people crazy with
weasels.) I would suspect this will not finish until next year, do you have a
(reasonably) firm completion date?

Thank you,

Hi, John

Based on previous experience, if I finish the first round by the end of
November, I would suspect that the final round of the tournament will be
completed in July, 1998. This tournament's first round was a bear with eight
matches to run, but three have been completed with more on the way.

John, and those otherwise TWIMC,

Perhaps if you approach individual players for their orders of battle
privately, with many oaths of secrecy sworn, they'll let you know what they've
got. I would.

I'm surprised Jon hasn't include some provision for lurking. Most PBeMs have a
strong lurker contingent.

> Strangely enough I didn't consider that anyone would look

I'm sure we, the EA players, all do that too. Sensors only cull so much info,
particularly with the obligatory area ECM.

Yes, I know they're range 24, but I also know *my* luck is so bad with them
you (and anyone else;) could prolly hit me at range 30. Goofball.

David,
Congratulations on the advancement. I think I'll wait it out
for a while yet. Thanks for the offer of a 'peak', but some points
were brought out that have enlightened me. If one was to know
to much, one could (without malice) blow some part of fleet or plan to a third
party. Then what do you have, you have those in the
tourney having to read the E-mail withour remembering the E-mail
they have just read to be fair to the other players who have also
read the same E-mail without really having read it at all.
Did you get that, I didn't. Bye for now,
