G'day guys,
Gave Derek his wedding anniversary present yesterday - packet of Eldar
destroyers, hellbors and a shadow cruiser. And he's mighty impressed, so now
he was wondering if you BFG conversion guys have any good ideas for FT stats
for them.
By the way, is it just me or do those ships look like Dr Seuss' Bloogle birds?
Thanks
Beth
No, I'm mighty impressed. Congratulations, Derek!
I haven't seen any Gothic Thrust stats for the Eldar yet, but they present
somewhat of a difficult fit into the FT world due to their
ability to move-fire-move much like a GEV in the Ogre universe. Not
impossible to convert, but I do not have any Eldar ships as yet.
Maybe Dr Seuss was an Eldar in disguise! But you're right, Beth.

Which book are they in?
G'day Tim,
> Which book are they in?
"Do you want to be a BullFrog?" or "Would you like to be a Bullfrog" or
something like that - I've read it every night for the last 15 days,
you'd think I'd know what it was called by now! Though there are similar birds
in the Mulberry Street book and a few of his other ones.

I haven't had the pleasure of that one yet, and at the rate my children change
which book they want for bedtime I'm going to be into my 17th childhood by the
time we get to it;)
Cheers

Much to my surprise, my wife and I share the same favorite Dr.Seuss book: On
Beyond Zebra. And it is the one that most people have never heard of.
It shows the marvelous letters that exist past the letter "Z". Most would look
nifty emblazoned on the side of an alien starship lead miniature.

You know... that's not a bad idea.
Hmm.
Oh, dear. (Of course, I've already *got* a plan for several of my
cruisers, based off an anime show -- Vampire Princess Miyu -- but my
escorts...?)
And what *do* you call the last one, anyway? And it'd be mighty hard to fit
*that* on the side of an escort....

according to amazon no such title attributed to the good doctor maybe its in
an anthology.

BFG miniatures the eldar ships do look very nice and are pricey but different
(5 pounds for a single ship) If only they were going to be issuing the
tyranids but at the moment nada.
For stats you could just make them up or base them on a FB design.
Nothing too firm on the Eldar yet (particularly since the Imperial/Chaos
stuff hasn't been playtested).
I expect I'd give the Eldar some kind of inertialess drive. In vector
movement, their nose and vector are always aligned and they can turn (nose and
vector) to any facing before applying thrust (acceleration, deceleration,
limited pushes). In cinematic, they again turn to any facing before moving,
then accelerate or decelerate. In either case, I'd let them write orders and
move with everyone else, fire, then move away (no orders except when facing
enemy Eldar).
To make a different force, have them write two sets of orders. Move the first
set, mark it, and move the second. They fire from the mark but are targeted at
the end point.
To make a really different force, again have them write the two sets of
orders. When activated, they move the first set, fire, then move the second.
Note that this option means several small fighter and missile resolution
phases which might do a good job of representing the Eldar holofield's
disruptive effects on anything but beam fire.
Since their weapons are more accurate, they probably need slightly different
weapon designs than the humans, too. Defensively, they are relatively safe
from lances, torpedoes, etc, but vulnerable to beams. Could be hard to model
(depending on how you model lances).
The Wyrm's Lair has some nice conversions to create a Tyranid BFG fleet.
> The Wyrm's Lair has some nice conversions to create a Tyranid BFG
Do you have a URL for this page? As an owner of more Tyranid ships than I
know what to do with, I'm curious. I need some Capital-sized ships.

Or issuing any _Squat_ stuff <big grumble>.

How are you basing them off VPM? Are you naming them after the Shinma, or
painting them similarly, or what? Tell us more!

The small Eldar stuff are actually almost cheap, I like 3 FF or DD for $9, and
I haven't paid retail for any of 'em. The cruisers are really nice models, and
yes they do scale in with B5W Minbari (as dreadnaughts).
G'day Jon,

So was I when Derek accidently poured himself a long TALL glass of wine (about
a pint) instead of juice (that'll teach him to put them side by side in the
fridge) and I suddenly found myself painting an Eldar fleet so he could take
them to the gaming club on the weekend;)

Derek wasn't necessarily after bringing over abilities like that, he just
wanted to hear peoples thoughts about fitting them into FTs existing
structure, thanks.

G'day Tim,

Actually it turned out to be "Would you rather be a bullfrog?" and its not
strictly by Seuss as it turns out, but another one of the authors that write
for that series of books (showing my complete literary ignorance wasn't I?)
> BFG miniatures the eldar ships do look very nice and are pricey
They didn't seem too bad to me - MUCH cheaper than what I'd expected
(its almost like GW is trying to sucker you in with the little guys before
nailing you with the big ships) - especially since GW had mislabeled and
priced the Shadow which they labeled as an Eclipse and priced at $14.95
(a
bit of a shock to the shop owner who was paying $18.95 for them).

Oh, yeah. I actually picked up a Blackstone Fortress, but that was because the
store owner offered me a discount if I could get it painted for the
in-store demo two days later. I did.... ^_^ I'm waiting for a sale
before I go for any of the BBs, my stock of Space Fleet ships does juuust fine
as Imperial cruisers, and the plastics then make nice battlecruisers.

...? Up here, the Shadow and Eclipse are both the same price... how much are
your escort blisters? (As for mislabeling, the local store received
blisters of Hemlocks -- the pulsar-lance ships -- that were mislabeled
as
Nightshades -- torp DDs. I didn't have Hemlocks for a while, until I
looked more closely at all the Nightshade blisters....)

Naming and (planning) to paint, really. My main problem has been a lack of
names as far as the Shinma goes... I was going to use the translated manga as
another source, but a flip through it (haven't read it yet) doesn't show
many -- any -- names. So I may have to look elsewhere... though on
reflection, I can't see the Eldar naming a ship "Yuzz-a-ma-Tuzz" so On
Beyond Zebra may not help as much as I'd like. ^_-
Anyway, the ships I'm working on include Miyu, an Eclipse cruiser that will
either be black with red highlights or something closer to the blue-gray
outfit she's usually in in the show... either will have the VPM kanji running
down the hood; Larva, a Shadow cruiser that'll be black with dark
blue highlights and an as-yet undetermined hood (though I'm likely to
try imitating his mask); then the two named Shinma from the first two episodes
(Raen and Ranka) as escort squadrons. They would be painted close to the style
of the critters in the anime, though I dunno if I'll be able to fit their
names on the ships. Lemures I want to save for a battleship, should one come
out, since in the manga (from what I've been told) he's a very powerful foil
for Miyu over the course of time. He'd be done in
red-on-black, which is why I don't really want to paint Miyu that way.
Se Himiko will likely be another Eclipse, with dark green highlights, but I'm
waiting on buying that for now. (Got enough to paint!) The armor from the 3rd
anime episode may show up somewhere, too... also not sure where I'll
put the different shinma yet, squadron-wise. (Though Raen, the
"imitation" vampire from ep.1 is likely to go with the Hemlocks, roughly
connecting the pulsar lances with fangs... and he was fast, too.)
Hmm, reviewing the LDs real quick, Raen is a.k.a. Baku, so I guess that's
another name I could use. And Miyu uses more outfits than I thought...
heh, good, 'cause the blue-gray outfit I was thinking of (ep.1) is also
close to Raen's. (White, red sash.) Anyway... I'll muse later, gotta find
time to paint now! ^_^;;
More later,
G'day Aaron,
> especially since GW had mislabeled and
They're probably the same price here too, the funny thing was the look on
the guys face - I got there as he opened the shipment - he was quite
shocked to find that the labeling indicated the retail price was less than
what he'd paid wholesale;)

They currently go for $14.95
(As for mislabeling, the local store received

Same thing happened to me I thought I'd got the Eclipse for Derek and it
wasn't until he started putting it together that we realised the label was
wrong - they must have been having a hard day at the packaging site.
