Subject: FT / DS2 interface (miniatures idea)

After reading through the Fleet Book and purchasing a couple of fleets I'm
finally ready to start playing Full Thrust. However, I noticed that little
attention has been given so far to the actual space to ground operations. (at
least not in the miniatures line)

A couple of things I'd really like to see added to the FT range:

- Specific assault boat carriers for each nationality. I know they're
currently listed as generic equipment, but they are warships of a sort, and
would probably each take on the "look and feel" of the specific Navy they were
serving.

- It would be really nice to have matching FT-scale and DS2-scale
assault landers. I know there is already that big resin version for DS2, that
should be pretty easy to make in FT scale...

- Though it's not really covered in the rules (is it?) I'd love to see
DS2 scale fighters as well. Unless there's some universe mechanic forbidding
it, I
imagine fighters would make good ground-support craft in a pinch.
Plus the new minaitures would tie in nicely with the idea in my other post (FT
fighter combat game)...

- I guess you could just retrofit this onto an existing design, but if
any of the nations have specially designed ships for planetary bombardment
(even
up-gunned assault carriers) they would be nice to have as well...

Some other random thoughts:

- in general, I'd really like to see more ships designed unique to the
different
nations. Things like Fleet tenders, repair/salvage ships, armed cargo
and
fuel carriers. This also includes non-ftl ships. (strikeboats and
system defense boats)

- Civilian ships are always nice, though I don't imagine they sell
terribly well. Still, I'd buy a luxury liner if one was produced. FTL
diplomatic couriers, scout ships, etc. woudl be nice too...

I suppose that's all. I figured rather then emailing Jon directly about this,
it might be nice to get some feedback. If nothing else, having ten people say
"I'd buy this" is always better than one.

Are you kidding, GZG has some wonderful Civilian ships I would buy in a
minute, however, they don't seem to be imported into the US.

Only a few are, and not ones I particularly want right now. GZG does have a
nice range alredy, but it's mostly cargo haulers (thogh I've gotta buy some of
those too) They don't have a passenger liner (afaik) and only one FTL shuttle
that I'm not too fond of...

...and by the way, I placed an order last week Monday by credit card. It was
shipped on Thursday and arrived this Monday. Even the shipping wasn't much
more than you'd expect to pay ordering from the US. Fantastic job, Jon! Still,
it'd be nice to get more of the civilian ships from GeoHex.

DSII pps 41-43, SGII pps 48-51.

There are only 2 DSII-scale aerospace fighters in the GZG line AFAIK
(DF-V09 Valderik and DF-V10 Phoenix), but there are lots of other
models around. Neither matches an FT fighter very well IIRC, though the
Phoenix has resemblance the NSL Adlers somewhat.

That depends entirely on their design. The B5 Aurora Starfury (the
common one in the show) can't operate in atmospheres IIRC :-/

A few problems here, mainly caused by the fact that there are only so
many ways to build a tender, cargo ship or small vessel :-/ They'd be
even more repetitive than the FB1 DDs (OK, the thrust rating and amount of
armour varies from nation to nation, but their armaments are
identical...).

The thing that strikes me is: Why constrict yourself to GZG models? There are
scores of different starship lines out there; chances are quite good that
someone already makes the model you're looking for.

Thanks. I figured I was just forgetting it, and I didn't have them in front of
me...

> > Unless there's some universe mechanic forbidding it, I

It doesn't seem like there are any restrictions in the GZG universe from
having fighters act in a ground support mode, but I could't remember for
certain.

> A few problems here, mainly caused by the fact that there are only so

Agreed, but I'd still like to see diferent models, even if the SSD's were
identical. There are cetainly specialized vehicles of that sort in use today.

However, things like assault landers and carriers might be very different.
Some might be expected to fight their way to the planet, some might be empty
hulls with hanger bays, some might have ortillery, some might even be
aeordynamic and land themselves (That'd make a truely massive model in DS2
scale)

> The thing that strikes me is: Why constrict yourself to GZG models?

Two reasons:

1) I'm kind of anal about 'official backrounds.' I know it's silly,
but that's the way I am. 2) I like GZG and would prefer to buy something from
then than any other

company (well, them or GeoHex)

> There are scores of different starship lines out there; chances are

In some cases that's true. But for instance, if I wanted a luxury liner I'd be
stuck unless I could find an old Traveller model on clearance. There just
aren't that many starships ranges in production, fewer ones that I like and
fewer still that match GZG's line.

If you haven't looked lately, you might want to look around, there seems to be
a plethora of starship models lately. You can get the ST starline 2200's again
(they were in production but hard to find earlier) including the SFB cargo
ship. The scale is pretty close. There is the new starship combat game in the
Fading Suns universe. I'm now using one of their really nifty looking heavy
cruisers as a BB, their destroyers are escort cruiser size. Unfortunately
Superior Miniatures is on hold, possibly forever, but the new fleet scale
stuff for B5 should fit right into scale.

Tuffleyverse is nice, and it's OK to be Anal about the "official" background,
but the official background is very humanocentric. I like more aliens in my
backgrounds, and the GZG stuff is all too close in design to really feel
alien. That's probably because it was all done by one designer.

What would I really like to see in miniatures from GZG? Well, in
addition to the mentionned non-combat things, I would love to
see a micro-carrier for each of the races. I'm thing about hacking
an FSE CE by cutting it apart and adding a runway.
