Subject: FT at Origins, or lack of

So what happened to whoever was going to run Full Thrust games at Origins. I
was there, never saw a single game. I was really disappointed. *sniff*

I did pick up some Phalon mini's, they were the only FT mini's there. The same
booth was the only to have FT books as well.

some OT stuff of what I did at Origins:

Lots of B5 Wars being played. I watched a demo of the Fleet Action for about 5
minutes and didn't like what I saw. Firing across a ship caused a minus to
hit? Count up all the weapons firing and roll lots of dice? Sounded all
munchkinly to me.:)

I played Advanced Civilization twice. Came in last place twice. *sigh* Those
games were also way too peaceful. Except for one attack by another player, and
attacks on pirates and barbarians, I was the only one to make any attack
efforts at slowing the leaders down (I was already way behind the Civilization
card purchases when I did this). And they spread the secondary effects of
calamities around so it barely hurt anyone. Egads. It was sickening to an
"old" wargamer like me. I know military actions are not a good option, but
there are times when it can be useful.

Finally got to play in a Runequest game after many years.
Lots of fun! The guy playing the "knuckle-dragging"
barbarian was a riot. And it, with a POW of 3, resisted being controlled by a
high POW evil artifact! (fyi, POW = Power statistic, a indication of magical
power and "in tune ness" with the world).

The pre-reg book had two FT events. However, the Great War scenario for
Battlestar Galactica is actually a GenCon event that was put in the Origins
book by mistake. The only FT event would have been on Sunday at noon.

> I played Advanced Civilization twice. Came in last place

That is actually a valid way to play AdvCiv. Some folks play a very cutthroat
game and others play a more friendly game. It depends on your playing style.
It can be disconcerting, on the other hand there are times when I really don't
want to play a nasty game. However, our group always had calamity effects
hitting the leader the worst, just so that you didn't get into the problem of
the early leader always winning the game.

Did you get to try the Dirtside game that was listed? I noticed there were no
Stargrunt games at Origins, either...

I noticed that there were only 2 players for the DS game when I looked into
the room. I was playing in my first Charlie Company game at the time,
otherwise, I might have been able to be convinced to play.

^%#^%$#!!!!!!!!!!

Origins always hits on a weekend that I cannot attend. And I live in Columbus!

Perhaps next year I can arrange a pick up game or something.

Glen (and the list in general)

I received NO requests for prize support from anyone for Origins. We haven't
attended the show in the last few years due to low turnout, VERY poor sales,
and very high cost. I was fortunate that Fortress Games, one of my wholesale
accounts, wanted to represent us at the show otherwise we would have had no
presence at all.

My feeling is that the card events overshadow everything else at that show,
and miniaturists are few and far between. We used to do very well at Origins
when the show had less of a focus on card games.

If you are planning to attend Origins next year and wish to run some events I
would be happy to sponsor you.

KR, I noticed that there were far more historical games in the pre-reg
book
for Origins than at GenCon, though there were far less non-historical
miniatures games. Is this a trend you noticed? I'm just curious, as GenCon's
mini events seem to be dwindling, too...

I wouldn't dare speak for KR, but Origins has always been considered
historical, board oriented, and GenCon fantasy/RPG. That said, both have
fallen to card by bunch.

I have been noticing a fair selling out of even the vaunted Poke-crack.
No
telling what'll be the next flavor-of-the-month. However, times of flux
are always times of opportunity.

You can be your local Evil Empire (tm) affeccianados(sp?) will be trying to
recruit the disillusioned young masses. (Yes, I know, plenty of WHFB and
40K players on the list; I've a few armies myself. ;->= )

Still, I may crank a little courage to try some FT on impressionable minds.

FWIW: GenCon locations for mini games has been abysmal the last few years.
This is supposed to be the year they make up for past sins.

PPS. I recall the shock, after seeing The Onion on the web for months, going
to GenCon and seeing actually hard copy for free in doorside stands in cafes
and the like. I assumed it was a web creation. DOPEY MOI!

Yes, Fortress Games was the ones, nice people. (but everyone that I talked to
at any booths were nice people <G>)

> My feeling is that the card events overshadow everything

I saw many miniature games, but not too many people at each game. They had the
miniature games upstairs and out of sight. Someone on the shuttle back to the
airport said he never saw them and had wanted to (those terrain set ups are
great to look at).

Maybe Historicon has taken a lot of the miniaturists, also?

Also, B5 Wars ran demos in the Breezeway, a windowed hallway
between the hotel and convention center - both had events, which
attracted a few people and where I watched a game.

> If you are planning to attend Origins next year and wish

I'll keep that in mind. I've commented to others that I might have more fun if
I ran events, that way I know I get to play what I want to play and cannot
blame the GM for not being there.:) My main problem would be the
transportation of miniatures.

Maybe run a demo game Thursday and Friday mornings with
main events in the afternoons and Sat./Sun.

Sunday seems to be a bad day to do anything. Most everyone is packing to go
home and don't care to lug their baggage around due to the noon checkout time.
I missed the FT game at Sunday noon cause I had to leave at 2 for the airport.
I didn't bother looking for it since I figured it wasn't being run just like
the other ones.

Allan,

Yes, there seems to be a very active Historical crowd at Origins who DO NOT go
to Historicon. Whether these folks are involved with HMGS or not I don't know.

Outside of these people the few miniature events I saw in years past were all
company demos.

I wasn't able to be at the con as I had a prior engagement with a Mountain in

sure the schedule for next year, either.

> My feeling is that the card events overshadow everything

I can happily endorse KR's statement here. I've run games at Origins in the
past and he's always been very supportive of 'his GMs'.:)

Well, when GenCon moves to Indy, I don't believe that there will be a problem
with bad positioning (at least not two blocks away positioning that is...) Our
convention center is pretty large! They just finished yet another addition to
it. I am REALLY looking forward to it. When it shows in our city, I'll
defintely be running a couple of FT games. I don't know if anyone on this list
played the last FT game I ran at GenCon a coupla years
ago...
It was called 'Sink the Bismark' and featured a rather impressive Kra'Vak
supership (Jon had a few interesting comments when he saw the mini my buddy
and I built for the supership!) My friend and I are refining the game... I
won't make it to GenCon this year...but I'm hoping for next year.
