Well, just been thinking...

A SMP is MASS 1, COST 3

For the MASS of 1 of them you could have a B-1 - ok, its only 2/3 the
range, less damage at all ranges, and is affected by screens - but it
has 6 arcs, can be used every turn, and doubles as a week PDS.

For the MASS of 4 of them you can have a B-3 or a Pulse torp, B-3 is
twice range and can be used once per turn (but OK, it is affected by
screens), Pulse Torp has +12mu on maximum range and does more damage,
penetrates armour, and can be used once per turn.
Or you could have a SMR - also 1-shot, but 2-extra arcs, +6mu extra
range (+another 6mu lock-on), _lots_ more damage, but needs skill to use
and can be stopped by PDS and/or fighters.

So, what are peoples experiences of using SMPs?

G'day Charles,

They're nice to put on really little guys for some up close and personal
punch.

I've never tried 'em, so can't comment on usage, but my wondering ran up
against: Has anybody found themselves having to hold a shot for fear of
'friendly fire' incidents? You DO hit ALL in the same arc, in range, including
comrades, right?

G'day,

> I've never tried 'em, so can't comment

I'm pretty sure they only hit the target of choice. PBLs and other template
stuff are the only things with friendly fire potential that I know of -
and yes I've held fire as a result in those cases...though seeing the look of
shock on your opponents face when you do the unexpected and zap you and them
can be funny... not quite as funny as the berating you give yourself the first
few times you unintentionally blow yourself up though;)

Useful fast anti-screen damage. Short ranged, but if you fire enough,
even battleships go pop.

I think they're great, especially for my ESU Penal Squadrons.

I'm not sure how balanced they are in FB1 because I'm still using FT2.

I find that scout ships carrying them are good for attracting Charles
attention away from the heavy ships with the conventional weapons.

IIRC the Rat did try a fast SMP armed Battleship [HMS Dictator] but it was
very much an all or nothing experience, with emphasis on the nothing. The all
Pulse torpedo ship did better.

If SMP's were cheaper they would probably become the weapon of decision at
close range. What Charles misses from his analysis is that for the small ship
types multi turn firepower is less valuable since they burn like butterflies
in a flame.

Of course Charles has accused me of considering scoutships to be little more
than antimissile decoys for my capital ships.

Nope. Quoting the rules (FT2 p.18): "Each pack representes a single cluster of
missiles that are fired as a single salvo, all aimed at ONE TARGET..."

Ok, I'm convinced - they're priced just about right!

I remember the Pulse-Torp dreadnought (to ba accurate, the
_Asymmetrical_
Pulse Torp Dreadnought :-) but not the SMP one.

Ok, I'm now convinced that they are priced ok.

The Rat's a Stieb. The SMP ship was the same evening IIRC. It didn't take K
gun fire well.

So _that_ explains my headachs (and a lot else, besides :-).

I'll give you that :-)
