Do you need new software, a new operating system, or a whole new information
structure? Look no farther! In Alarishi space, orbiting LTT 4818, you'll
find....
The Planet of the Geeks!
That's right, a planet (okay, planetoid, let's not be petty) full of geeks,
including experts on every operating system known to man (and several which
are not)! A place where live geeks of every kind: MacUsers, Nerds,
Pointy-Ear Trekkers, B5-ers and L5-ers, Linuxers, even the rare
Propeller-Beanie Geek! In fact, the sovereignty's charter is not in
English, Russian, or French, but in Molniya machine code (and whether you read
machine code or not, the charter should tell you all you need to know about
becoming a Geek citizen)! Techno-weenies, Sysops, Gurus, Secret Geek
Masters, Geek Lords, and even the King Geek himself--all are now
available to work on your project! For a special premium, you can even hire a
Geek
Squad to travel to your site and re-engineer your system while you watch
(dumbfounded)! So whether you're planning the Ultimate Trek Triviabase(tm), or
a No Sparrow Shall Fall Skywatch array, just bring your problem (and your
MUCr) to...the Planet of the Geeks!

cool! can i apply for citizenship? hmph, come to think of it, i probably
already am a citizen ... :-).
> A place where live geeks of every kind: MacUsers,
part of the point of mac users is that they're (we're?) not geeks - macs
are friendly and nice. MacKiDo warriors, on the other hand, are
RISC-crazed code samurai. they'd move in.
> Nerds,
one question here: given that geeks tend to be male (why bother with the
excess weight of a second full X chromosome?) how do they breed? i suppose
they might have a treaty with that lesbian commune you have...
> In fact, the sovereignty's charter is not in English,
i'm not familiar with the Molniya's architecture myself, but i wouldn't have
thought that an imperative language, as any von neumann machine's language has
to be (i think), cannot be used to frame charters, constitutions, laws, etc.
plus, the page size is too small (ouch!).
no, what you need is predicate calculus. it is entirely possible to write
rules in predicate logic - i've done it myself, in a proposal defining
hereditary membership of the university SF society. the proposal was rejected
as being too vague, which really takes the michael.
anyway, predicate logic would be your language of choice.

i assume the identity cards (which are digital, of course) carry a Geek Code
Block.

although the Planet does prefer to barter, provided you have cool stuff. after
all, they'd just use the money to buy cool stuff anyway, so why not cut out
the middleman and get the client to do the buying?
i'd add that geeks aren't just computer folk; the Geek Code defines 21 types
of geek, plus four nonspecific types. it doesn't mention military geeks
either, and they are bound to exist. remember, a planet full of wargamers with
that much computer power is going to be damn good at tactics...

I work with quite a few female geeks (and know more) who are in no way, shape,
or form lesbians. I do not think this is going to be a problem necessarily.
Just fyi. If you're not finding them, you need to get out more. :-)

oh, please don't get me wrong here: i am certainly not implying female geeks
are lesbians. i'm sure there's no particular correlation there.
i was just observing that most geeks - not all, but certainly most - are
male, thus requiring somewhat unusual population-replacement methods. of
course, in the future, we may have gender equality, in which case this problem
goes away.
my suggestion concerning the lesbian commune was that the Planet... erm
... outsource its child-bearing requirements; this would be a mutually
beneficial deal, as neither colony could produce children alone, and geek
genes are probably pretty good - high intelligence.
of course, both worlds could actually produce children on their own, using mad
science, which is probably the best option as usual.

no, i need to stay in, but somewhere else...

What shape or form are these females?;)

Yes... and if their shapes are in anyway "pleasing" could you send
me their phone numbers... ;-)

There are a number of avenues you may pursue to rectify the situation
if you really want. :-)

For the record, one of the better places to find female geeks is in strip
clubs.
Not all dancers are geeks, of course, nor are all female geeks dancers, but a
good chunk of
exotic dancers tend to be fem-geeks.

My subconscious and I had a couple of conversations about this, after reading
Tom Anderson's responses:
> The Planet of the Geeks!
The Radical Lesbian Collective is recently defunct, but in any event wouldn't
have considered the offer at all (and would have shot the messenger, if
there'd been a messenger). I suspect that breeding is a perk for the upper
social levels of geekdom, but my subconscious discouraged speculation on this
area.
> In fact, the sovereignty's charter is not in English,
I just wrote what my subconscious told me. It muttered something about
"Klingon" and "twelve bit trinary logic characters" when I went back and
asked. I have no idea what it meant. I think "Molniya" is Russian for
"Lightning."
> anyway, predicate logic would be your language of choice.
Who said I had any choice in the matter? I only score about 35% Geek.

And you're expected to understand it without notes.

They seem to be trying to market their software skills at the moment.
> the Geek Code defines 21
Except for a regrettable tendency to forget about "friction", and to get
excessively subtle. In the annual tournament in the Hall of the Mountain King
(laser tag teams of 200 on a side, in zero gee, grav bike cavalry, wings, and
so forth), the Geeks divided their team into 48 squads with different
assignments and a seventy minute multimedia briefing. The Imperial Express
team, their first match, crushed them. The ImpEx briefing is here quoted
verbatim: "You know how your lasers work? Okay. Break through the middle and
then finish them off. Go get'em, have fun, and hey! I'm buying if you
win!"
