There is one disadvantage of the metal bases. They are bigger, which means
ADFC coverage is more difficult.

Ok, I'm dense, I give up. I looked at the book, am not seeing something.
Please explain the last statement.

Hmm, I've never really had that problem, unless of course you're playing in
cm. rather than inches, then it does become a bit difficult:)

ships physically close to each other on the table, therefore increasing
formation spacing.

This is understandable, but its not as big a deal when you've happened upon it
like I have. I started saving the metal bases for the big ships (an Ark Royal
on a plastic base just isn't as stable). Small warships get the plastic bases.

smaller than the bases.
Just FYI, I have 12 bases which I use for combat. After I finished these 12 I
have never bothered to build or paint any more as I have never had more than a
dozen ships on the table. For teaching people six on a side is more than
sufficient.

I just mounted my Ark Royal last night: plastic stands. Same with my Foch.
Note: stands! Plural. I drilled new holes and mount the plastic stands one
behind the other. The lateral stability is okay (still not great) but the ship
won't fall forward or backward.
In the case of the Ark Royal, it came with a metal stand but I decided that
two plastic stands were more stable. It also frees up a metal stand for
another miniature.

One of our members (kaime on this list too) hooked me on the washer, nail
technique for creating virtually endless tough, good looking metal stands. And
the tips never break off in the model.
You just take a wide washer with a hopefully narrow hole, glue a nail upside
down, prime and paint black with something like Krylon spray. It ends up with
a nice, good looking, durable finish and it's very rugged.
I only use those GZG stands on special occasions (like UN miniatures with
absurdly long vertical wings).

The overall mass of the model makes any sudden shock more likely to fracture
the post on the plastic bases. Small figs don't mind nearly
as much. I do re-drill the holes in some cases to the CoG of the
figure or in some cases just expand the hole size.
