Subject: [FT] Accel/Decel in cinematic movement

Hey, guys, I'm taking a poll.

I have a question about when acceleration is applied in Full Thrust cinematic
movement. Does it affect the ship's velocity in the turn in which the thrust
is used, or does it affect the ship's velocity for the *next* turn?

I've played FT with several different people, and it's been about a
50/50 split which way it goes. I've read the movement rules in FT2
several times, and it's not explicit. I counted three places that implied it
affects this turn's V, and one place that implied it affects next turn's V,
along with several completely ambiguous statements. I don't have my book with
me or I'd quote 'em.

Personally I don't care too much either way, except that I happen to love
fighters. And using the FB fighter movement rules it gives a huge advantage to
fighters if thrust affects the next turn's movement instead

of this turn's movement. Therefore, I prefer having the delta-V happen
immediately, not wait a turn. You may ask, "why?" when it hurts my
effectiveness, and the answer is that I think fighters are more than effective
enough without the additional advantage of knowing exactly how

far every ship on the board is going to move, even if you don't know where
they're turning.

So, for those of you who use cinematic movement, which way do you play?

Thanks,

Hmm - and here I thought that the rules were very clear on this point.
I read them as affecting the next turn's velocity. FAQ MAN!!!!!! <g>

Which is really strange, since every game I've played (and the PBeM games I've
been in) have said it effects this turns speed.

eg.

Turn 0
X position - 85.0
Y position - 53.0
Heading 9 (i.e. due west) speed 6

Orders for turn 1 - 0+2

Turn 1
X position - 77.0
Y position - 53.0
Heading 9 (i.e. due west) speed 8

so 8 units moved on turn 1. (this example taken from Vanguard's Cruise

Velocity is affected on the same turn.

In the games I have played (mostly PBEM) all course/speed changes happen
in the same turn.

Thanks, Nathan

Interesting. Luckily, Lonnie has his books with him today, and after careful
reading of all relevant sections, I have to agree with Ken - it *is*
ambiguous. I can see how it can be read either way, but there are more
suggestive statements for affecting 'this turn's movement' as opposed to the
other.

This markedly reduces the effectiveness of fighters and salvo missiles. It
will also tend to speed up game play a touch from what Lonnie & I are used to
- playing 'velocity changes next turn's movement' has caused both of us
to plan movement orders a little more like a chess match, since we're both
thinking 3 or 4 moves ahead.

Well, the [OFFICIAL] answer is that it affects the V in the turn the thrust
is used - ie: if you're doing velocity 6, and thrust 4 to accelerate to
10, you move 10" in the turn that the thrust order relates to. I'd always
assumed that was pretty clear, but maybe that's just because
no-one has ever queried it with me before! <grin>

Immediate effect.
