First of all: Thank you all for the help with styrofoam. The first coat of
Mod-Podge is drying even as we speak (producing an odor that's very
nearly tangible at this point); I suspect that I'll need to apply at least
another two coats before I'm done. But so far, so good.

I was discussing this project with a friend today, and he made a novel
suggestion: Use half of a clear dome (like those dispensed by the toy machines
in supermarkets all across the U.S.) and paint the continents, seas, and
terrain on the *inside* surface of the dome. This would be
difficult, but not impossible -- you'd be painting from the outside in.
Then, when the "surface" is done, paint cloud formations on the outside of the
dome. This should lead to actual shadows of clouds on the surface of the
planet if the lighting conditions are right.

Frankly, this is beyond my painting skills. I thought that someone might be
intrigued by the idea, though. I seem to remember a web page that showed a
similar idea (The Helios Project, I think?) but can no longer find the links.

I'm getting in a bit late on this discussion, but...

You can spray styrofoam directly with Krylon "Living Colors" primer, then
paint with acrylic paint and flock it as you please.

Speaking of which:

Dateline: Reynolds Sovereignity, Alarishi Empire Reynolds Shipyards is pleased
to announce the launching of the
_Makowsky_,
lead vessel of a class of purpose-built rescue cruisers. Equipped with
high-powered military drives and the latest ITT scan/search gear, these
vessels are designed to get there fast when minutes count. In addition to
the SAR function, these ships would make ideal customs/patrol craft;
hardpoints are included for the convenience of those customers who wish to
add a frigate-grade weapons suite.

Makowsky Patrol Cruiser (Alarishi) Mass 64 NPV 214 Hull 13 MD 6 FTL 2 armor

Pressurize-safe cargo bays 4 mass

This is pretty cool... and a neat way of honoring a member of the list that
does one of the tough jobs that many of us would probably have trouble
doing... but I really have to ask... what's next, the Deboe Class Grazer
Sheep, uhm, I mean ship?

Heh. I probably couldn't *carry* a complete manual of "S.A.R. Helicopter
Piloting for Dummies", much less do it.

I asked Magic [mumble mumble] ago if I could name a ship class for him, but I
was never satisfied with the weapons load. But an EMP beam looks like a good
fit.

Grazers are only found on Ewe N sheeps.

Uh-huh... 1-uped on my own pun.... fine... you asked for it...

EweN Deboe Class Grazer Gunsheep done up with the Ship Design tool...

Item Mass Points Basic Hull (51) 51 Hull Integrity (in 4 rows) 10 20 Armour 2
4 FTL Drive 5 10 Main Drive (Thrust 6) 15 30
Sub-total 32 115
FCS x 2 2 8 PDS 1 3
Class 1 6-arc Grazer x 4 (16 mass) 16 0
Sub-total 19 11
Total 51 126

BTW... in doing this I discovered that Grazers really are evil... if
you do the math... the cost per arc for Class 1 6-arc Grazers.. comes
to.666 Mass per arc...

Hmpf. I have at least Average integrity, although possibly in five rows.

Definitely need more defenses to shrug off Narn battacks

Substitute some EMP beams to simulate the brain-melting puns.

Reynolds also offers the Makowsky-V design, which adds a hanger bay and
2
or 4 SAR small craft, although at a reduction in cargo/passenger
capacity.

DeBoe... Class name updated...

1 Grazer subbed out for 2 Class 2 EMPs.... design change noted...

All other feedback noted, but not used... Vessel class is designed
specifically to appear in small groups as part of a flock... erm,
fleet...

To save OO pointiong it out:

> Makowsky Patrol Cruiser (Alarishi)

Yes, it does say B2/2arc. You could remove "Pin, Limiting, Turret
Rotation
Track, P763/8, Install Pos120" and install it in Pos180 if you wish,
although you might not know that if you don't have a tech rep (Cr
900/day
plus expenses) on hand to tell you.

You may also draw whatever conclusion you wish about the intended accuracy of
AE press releases for military tech.
