Subject: FOG OF BATTLE

many years ago, i ran SPACE MARINE (FGU, not GW!) 25mm game that handled this
in a unique way. the outcome was soooo succesful, that this was done on
several occassions over the years using STARGUARD, STRIKE FORCE ALPHA,
STRIKER, LASER GRENADIERS, and 40K.

the game was played in two different locations, with two different tables,
miniatures, terrain and etc, 8 players, and 3 GMs.

LOCATION #1 was the HQ where 4 players and a GM moved toys, and
issued orders during the battle.

this game was HOW the battle looked to the commanders in their CP.

LOCATION #2 was the area where 4 gamers and a GM actually fought the battle
(moving troops, tossing dice, etc), attempting to follow the orders issued by
HQ.

each turn, HQ was allowed 10 minutes to digest reports from the front, remove
casualties, and 10 minutes to issue orders based on the sitreps they recieved
from the combatants.

orders and sitreps were sent over the SW BELL telephone system using voice and
radio call signs between one player in the field and one player in the HQ at
time and recorded on a tape cassette recorder
/player by the GM at each location.

GMs had great fun crinkling cellophane, ad libbing weird sounds, etc,
during the sitrep/order phases to make life hard for the gamers at both
ends who were trying to understand what was happening.

THE RECORDING WAS PLAYED ONE TIME FOR EACH PLAYER AT HQ AND ON THE FIRING
LINE!

when some one finally broke through on the enemy comms, all of the
recordings were played back at the same time, non-stop, ONE TIME!

added a whole new understanding to FOG OF BATTLE for gamers....

might be an interesting variation for a SG II.

Dawgie,

We tried this in Gloucester a while back with Rapid Fire(back when I livend in
Gloucester...) and it descended in to even more confusion, as pieces of
terrain changed properties depending on which umpire was standing where.

It was fun though, and if you have the figures/space its great!

Fair few years back we actually did this with GW's Space Hulk. Two (large)
boards (we had three full sets with expansions) at either end of a basketball
court (it was at a convention) and an umpire at each table (who were actually
in radio contact.

It was a fun game.
