The ongoing discussion of FMAS draft.

Sadly, I didn't note who said this but...:

"kneel, 1/2 move; go prone, 1/2 move + 1/2 move to get up", something
like that, and 1 or 2 levels extra cover or conceallment or whatever?

[Tomb] As I pointed out off-list to Allan -- prone and kneeling have a
number of aspects. One is the cover/concealment issue. The other, as you
pointed out, is getting up. Another aspect is effective range. Standing, doing
some tricks with your webgear layout, you can arrange some sort of a
limited rest for your rifle but it is quite ad-hoc. Kneeling/sitting,
you get a more stable platform... but I still don't like that pose unless I'm
behind something. If someone is going to shoot at me, prone is the best
place to be - it gives me a small target profile and it gives me a good
rest (the ground) for my weapon and thus increases accuracy and effective
range. These positions don't just make you a harder target, they make you a
better shot effectively.

Me. I don't know why Schoon didn't beat me to it as usual, he must be out of
town.

One idea worth considering is abstracting it all and stating that figures are
always in the most tactically advantageous position, given terrain, targets of
opportunity, etc. That way when someone forgets to put down a chit for "prone"
his figure, who doesn't know any better, doesn't get whacked as easy. If it's
abstracted, it lets you worry more about using terrain to your advantage for
movment, rather than the minutia that tend to bog down games.

"Ok, Pvt. Joe Neckbone is going to roll on his right side to get off a shot."
Wait, doesn't he have a canteen on his web belt on the right side?" "Oh yeah
you're right, he'll be negative 2 to hit that way, I'll just have him slinky
out on his belly to get the shot off."

I like the level of detail In Position from Stargrunt provides. If a figure
spends an action and passses a reaction test it would be consitered using
whatever cover it has to its best advantage. The actual position the figure
would be in can be determined from what cover is around (kneeling if by a
wall, on his belly behind a rock praying if in the open) and one mechanic
covers the action. It would also give experenced troopers an edge rather than
assuming a green ganger can get as much benifit from cover as an elite
commando.

It doesn't seem to model crawling around on your belly though.

Don't forget the K-Bar combat knife, the 6 extra clips in his side
pouch,
the can of K-rations, the good luck charm, that really interesting rock
he found and decided to save and of course the package of nylons should he
ever get back to the rear.

And hopefully the FMAS rules will be upwardly compatable for integration into
SG3 and DS3.

Now that's a Holy Grail I admit I harbor a secret desire for. A set of systems
from FMAS through SG through DS through FT to let me run a
campaign where I can dice-roll most events but play out the ones that
look fun or interesting.

Gracias, Glenn
