I'll take a rifle like the FN over just a knife. More reach, better to block
with for most things. Or at the very least, comparable.

Hmmm...
1) I think you under-rate a rifle. Or at least the comment would depend
on
the type of rifle. If I have to go HTH with a G-11 in my hands, I might
not find it much use (not quite as good as a baseball bat). But if I have an
FN,
much more dangerous - a good jab with the barrel can break teeth or
seriously damage a kneecap and if I get a chance to throw in a buttstroke, the
ribcage and head might get some nasty damage. I think d4 is a bit
week -
an AAR might be d6 and an older, more solid rifle might be d8.

2) A bayoneted equipped rifle might get one shift up. (to d6/d10
respectively).

3) What happens if you get engaged in CC and are holding (based off something
like a Space Crusade Scout figure) a pistol and a knife? Yes, it is CC, but if
I'm not out of ammo, you're going to come at me, I might have
to repel/block the first attack, but then I'm going to shoot you
repeatedly in the vitals. How should the presence of firearms such as pistols
be resolved as part of CC?

4) If I'm rushed and end up fighting with my FN with a bayonet on it, or in
HTH with my SMG while my opponent tries to kill me with a knife - can I
shoot him in the middle of CC if I make some sort of a test?

5) Where does grappling (everything from jiu jutsu for submission locks to
just plain wrassling while two guys try to choke the life out of each other)
enter CC and does it impact the dice rolled?

6) How do we include a personal flamer? Fire combat (pardon the pun) weapon?
CC weapon? Both?

7) Should being encumbered provide a negative CC shift?

Just some thoughts to stir the mix.

Tom's made some good points - it seems that Mr. Tuffley is ahead of both
of us, however.

In the very last section of the FMA beta rules, deep in that points cost
section I hadn't been paying attention to, there's whole lists of HtH
weapons and values associated with them - from which, I think, Jon's
intended rules can be panned out.

Basically, each HtH weapon has die like a ranged weapon: there's a Weapon die
value & an Impact die. If a modification of the ranged mechanic is
used, I'm assuming each combatant in HtH rolls their Quality + HtH
Weapon die types. If a hit is scored, the Impact die is used vs the victim's
Armour die.

EG Squaddie Funk has an AAR w/ bayonet, and is REGULAR. Ganger Zroog has
a big Sword that he thinks is kool, and is GREEN.

Assuming Zroog gets to within chopping range of Funk, Zroog will get d6
+
d10 (Quality + Sword die) vs Funk's d8 + d8 (REG quality + bayonetted
rifle). If Zroog's kool sword gets past Funk's rifle, the ganger rolls d8
impact vs Funk's d6 partial armour. Otherwise, Funk rolls d8 bayonet Impact vs
the ganger's d4 leather coat.

These rules do have rules for just shooting the other guy while in HtH -
an SMG, for instance, rolls a d10 Weapon die, and Impact is identical to
ranged fire (d6 or d8 for an SMG - I can't find the values right
now...)

Points:

- I'd like to see some sort of reaction check for ranged-weapon armed
characters who're being charged - give them a chance to whip the gun
around and shot the charging guy. Obviously Reaction Fire/Overwatch can
be used, but some sort of extra firing might be in order - reaction
test,
at +0 if the figure didn't fire when they were activated, +1 if they did
fire? (Rationale being that a figure focussing on firing is probably more
likely to be blindsided?)

- I'm assuming that the above method of HtH resolution would use a
varient
of the Major/Minor Success (beat two/one die) - say, Minor success = no
attack but victim must make Reaction/Confidence check to remain in HtH?
Major success = move on to Impact/Armour damage rolls?

Hopefully we'll have another bash at FMA in the next week or two, and we'll
give some of the more detailed HtH rules a shot.
