I was thinking about adding some auxiliary ships to my NAC fleet, which can
double as Merchant ships for scenarios. In FB1, a typical version is
described, in the Mass 100 range, but also mentioned, smaller-bigger
ones are possible.
UNSC has one, which seems quite big as well, and the KraVak has a smaller
(Mass 40).
The question crossed my mind: Are there different classes of tenders as well?
One which usually serves up to destroyer? And really big one for the
Dreadnaughts and up? Different one for fuel? For ammunition? For food and
other consumables? Or the one basket for all..?
Hospital ships? They were converted/used by surface navys, but would
they be justified in the space..? If you get in an accident up there, not much
chance to survive, yet far from the safety of planetside hospital complexes or
the huge space stations they might boost the morale
Skimming through my FB2 it also seemed a good question: While KraVak and
Phalon (might) have axuliaries as well, what will the SaVasku do..? Rulewise
you can make one with huge biomass minimum weaponry and a dronebay  as long
as the other has one as well, it would have no problem. One or two waves of
drones and pods and the ship is gone... At least no
problem with fat. ;-)

Are we assuming mid-combat pickups here or would the victor do the
pickups? Hospital ships are a good thing in that, if you "win", you get to
pickup surviving crewmembers. What about the opposing forces? I
would think convention would be to pick them up as well (if time/space
permit) because these crewmen would be valuable property to own when it came
time for exchanges and such.
I'd also think that hospital ships would have a large group of Marines onboard
to help keep the natives calm.

I would also like to think that Human space going navies would all agree that
their biggest enemy is space iteself, as ocean going saliors feel about the
sea. A guy in a lifepod is no threat to a destroyer so you may as well pick
the poor sod up (then through him into cold sleep so as not to waste to much
resources on transporting him).

Depends on the sort of war; but in general I certainly can't see a
reason _not_ to. This may of course be one of the biggest morale
problems in the K'V invasion.

Of course, if you expect to need a hospital ship, you can hire one instead of
having it permanently on your payroll. "Mercenary hospital ship" sounds a
little odd but Search And Rescue Company (SARCo) certainly qualifies as
"mercenary" and they have hospital craft as well as salvage tugs and search
craft available.
You may want to look through the archives for the tale of OUDF Wombat of
Retribution, formerly Hokkaido Maru.

There's some material on this sort of subject in "Last One Out is Toast" by
David Manley printed in Ragnarok 24 and now available on
the SFSFW web site: http://www.sfsfw.net/a/24/toast.php
It's pre-Fleet Book material but may be of interest
David also wrote an article about auxiliaries in Full Thrust that covered
resupply and refueling. This was in Rag 18 and I hope to have that up on the
site before the end of the year.
Oh, sure, Steve, pi** on our parade and point out we're reinventing the
wheel! ;->=
I must say, it was a pleasant bit of brainstorming that may have added a few
points I've not seen so far.
One interesting thing:

forces put into rescuing downed fighter pilots in Vietnam, and think what
human forces would do if facing an enemy such as the Kra'Vak!
Two great minds...
I suppose this means I'll have to think about re-joining SFSFW... *sigh*

Build a generic cargo ship of some mass that matches the approximation of the
model as compared to your others. Paint it up either as how the military
models are done or make them up in a more civilian mode.
Other large cargo ships are pretty generic. I can
probably dump 8-10 different merchant type hulls
on the table that work quite nicely.

Yep, I've got one. Painted white with black wash and has red crosses on the
sides and top in very bright red. Just according to current conventions. I've
also made up white with Red stripes Coast Guard cutters using the Arapahos and
variants. One stretch Arapaho is the basis for one of the cutters.

I'd expect that if you're invading a planet, a few hospital ships would be
part of the task force to provide safe and proper hospital care for the
injured of both sides that are carried to orbit. Just like today. Further,
they could be used as ships to give aid to planets that have just had serious
disasters. They'd have their own launch bays for interface to the surface and
could also dock with other craft.
Just think of the size of the medical facilities on a large 60 ton vessel.
