Hello all,
I seem to recall Jon mentioning a couple of months ago that an
EFSB-style
"Heavy Beam System" was being considered for the new Fleet Book. I have not
seen any mention of this system in the recent reviews. Did it make it past
playtesting? Or did it just not fit in with the new beam weapon rules?
Is the class 4 beam weapon more like the EFSB class 4 pulse battery or the old
AA beam battery? (ie, does it use the same 12" range bands as the others now?)
If so, would larger beam weapons follow the same progression? (double the
mass, add a range band, increase dice by one per band - assuming thats
still the same)
Thanks.

Well, that's the way we always played it in our group. We reversed the
original letter progression (A was large, now A is smallest), and scrapped the
AA for the D-class beam battery (4d, 48" range). Not having the Fleet
book yet, this seems to be correct. I like it, personally. It allowed us to do
really out-there things, like F-class beams & higher (big spinal
mounts).
A question to those who have both the Fleet Book & the EFSB - Is it
worth getting both? Are they mostly dupes, or different?

Definitely! Of course they both have different ships. With the FB you
get the recent ship construction system. I haven't been able to locate a point
system in the EFSB yet.
The FB also provides some interesting background info on "official" (and
I use this word lightly) races.
The variety of ships in the FB makes for easy and quick pick up games for cons
and gaming get togethers.
> Hello all,
We decided NOT to include it in the FB - too much to get in already, and
it
is rather a genre-specific system that didn't really fit here. It WILL
probabaly be in FT3 proper.

Like EFSB; it is just a bigger beam, using all basic rules. The special rules
for the AA batt are now defunct.

Yes. this is explained in the FB, you can now have as big a beam as you
like, but above class 4 to 5 they become VERY non-cost-effective.

This is no point or construction system for the EFSB, because we wanted to be
able to rate the ships to reflect how they are seen on TV rather than being
restricted by a design system. All the EFSB designs are thus "arbitrary" and
don't conform to any formulae, but we hope they reflect what they can do in
the show (with allowances for game balance of course). You can probably "cost"
the EFSB ships (in points) using a midified version of the FB points system.
