U have to love Kids,
I was recently playing a gam with a friend and his sons. Being "prime
target" I lost all but 1 Firecon on a Battledread.. So in Missile
phase I fired
off 1 from a launcher and bay that was not hit... and went to fire
Beams at a seperate target, when the youngest child pointd out i had used my
only fire
con on missile... and there for my Battledread couldn't fire at his
Light Cruiser who turned and faced his aft end to me...
We looked thur the rule book and couldn't find a rule that stated they need a
firecon, but the young child made agood case..
Is he right, or do we have a future RULES LAWYER on our hands?

You have to have a functional firecon to launch any number of missiles, BUT
you can also use that firecon for direct fire weapons against another target
later on.
Only Pulse torps need dedicated firecons. Missles only need a scan to send to
target.

Thanks,
That was what i thought that they need firecon to "search for hostile" before
firing, but that same FC is available to Beams, but couldn't find it in rules
directly..

THey the kid made a good arguement based on the rules he "understood" And
without being abe to quickly find "contradicting" info. But I guess
U are
right.. Better go out and by the kid, Star Fleet Battles system.. that
will either kill the budding RULES LAWYER, and Making him an expert at it.

I say that the fact you are unsure enough to be asking the rules question
on this mailing list answers the "rules lawyer" question.
But from the child's standpoint, it worked.

IIRC this restriction (pulse torps requiring dedicated firecons) was relaxed
after the FB books came out. I tried mining the GZG archives for specific
post, but too much stuff in there for the time I have available to dig.

Correct. This doesn't quite address the initial question, though.
Normally a firecon locked on Target A can't also direct fire at Target
B.
However, a firecon can be used for missile fire (at any target, or any number
of targets) *and* for direct fire against a different target in the same turn.
I expect this was just to keep people from having to track firecon use across
several phases.

Yes, exactly. That's the correct ruling, AND the correct reason why we did it!
