I agree totally here, why the heck do sci-fi troops have no personal kit
?
I also have to say that I think GZG is one of the big offenders here, although
Jon makes a (by most comapnies standards) huge range of figs almost all of
them are woefully underequipped. Take for example the three nationalities I
have, NAC, NSL and FSE. The NAC marines have one or two pathetically small
pouches on thier shoestring thin belts, the FSE also have a hand waving
attempt at belt order plus a rather poor attempt at a day rucksack, while the
NSL are laughable as they do not have any belt order, I can just see it (in a
teutonic voice) "Trooper just make sure you don't run out of rounds in that
one magazine, or if you do just say BANG
!"
OK so I can admire the clean lines of a figure as much as the next gamer, but
really I would also like to see a resemblance to a military figure, after all
we are playing soldiers! When I have made comaprisons of
sci-fi
figs it appears the only campanies adding belt order are/were Grenadier
with thier Future warriors, Denizen (light order), and dare I say it, Games
Workshop. Now we may all deplore thier marketting tactics but I think thier
new Guards (in particular) the Caidian (sp?) ones look more
like sci-fi troops, they have what looks to be a reasonable belt load,
if only they didn't dwarf everybody else's figure range. OK, so where am I
going with this rant, first I'd like to repeat my (regular) call to Jon for
more belt order/marching order figs plus REcon/LURP/Pathfinder types
with
rucks/bergens and kit. And secondly I'd actually like to suggest an
alternative, I have recently been shopping around 20mm WWII figs and I was
stunned, the quality of many manufacturers completely blows away most
25/28mm manufaturers (GZG included), PLUS, the figs ALL have a realistic
amount of kit. In particular worth looking at for use in sci-fi are
late war German SS Panzergrenadiers with assault rifles, thier smocks, helmets
and weapons don't look out of place when comaperd with modern/near
future figs and with a bit of careful shopping around moutain troops and
others equiped with rucksacks can be found. I think one other advantage of the
20mm figs may be the problem of crowded table that can occur with 25/28
(more especially the latter) platoons. I have seen games with a couple of
platoons of 20mm figs plus 20mm AFVs on a 6x4 table and they do not look too
squashed in. And remember, 20mm (ish) buildings are easily available in model
railway stores!
OK so rant mode is now off, comments anyone? (flames to personal email please
rather than the list).
I am afraid that I must disagree here. Though it is a bit of a "realism"
sacrifice, I like the relatively unencombered SF figures. Makes it easier to
paint, and allows enough area for adding rank and unit flashes.
Just my 2 FSE francs worth.

Not any more.... Blade Miniatures had some very nice stuff in the UK a couple
of years back, sculpted by the guy from SHQ, but Blade went
toes-up
and there is no sign as to who has the moulds - certainly there's been
no
hint of a re-release.
As to us doing full-kit figures, yes, this is something we've had in
planning for a long time - there just never seems to be enough time to
get round to it!! Keep watching this space....

<grin>..
Guess your troops will be eating their shoes while mine eat their MREs..
Hey. Now that you mention it that might not be a bad tradeoff.......

I pretty much agree with all of your comments. Would like to see more kit. Are
people not going to be drinking water or eating rations in the future? Or
maybe each magazine holds 1500 rounds of caseless 4mm? I like 20mm as I
believe in more "personal space" on my battlefields. (I have a company of
Fallschirmjager in 20mm). But Does anyone make 20mm SCi Fi troops?
Ah, mon ami, with FSE culinary skill, you can rest assured that it will be the
most delectible shoe leather in the known universe...;)
...and we always have the emergency wine ration to see us through...:)
Ciao!

I picked up my SHQ stuff (Gulf War, Vietnam and WWII) from Brookhust Hobbies.
I think they have a WWW site. I liked the Gulf war range, both British and
Iraqi's, but I was hoping that U.S., French and Arab forces were going to be
added...so far nothing. SHQ I think sells direct from the U.K. as well. Don't
know who else distributes them. Wargames Illustrated and Miniature Wargames
run their ads on a regular basis.

Actually if you look at the figures produced by GZG in the latest ranges;
namely NSL Light Infantry, Oceanic Union and the Pan African heavy Infantry
they all have good and realistic amounts of belt kit (granted not
rucks/bergens but then that would dtract from the back/shoulder mounted
guchi electonics fit). I wouldn't expect any of the troops that will operate
vehicle mounted to be modelled with LOTS of gear on their backs; SOP would be
to leave that kit in the vehicle unless they HAVE to carry it.
I guess it is up to us to let GZG know if we want a particular trend in the
lines given that they probably get relatively little feedback through other
channels.
Cheers,

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. More kit can equal harder to paint, but I
find the end result worth the extra effort. YMMV.
