Subject: Fighter solutions- bigger fighters, Strike Control?
Would one possible solution to the fighter problem be to re-size fighters - standard fighters - mass 1, standard interceptors mass 2, anti-ship fighters mass 3. PSB would be that interceptors carry larger, longer range more capable missiles (like the Phoenix on an F-14) vs. the standard payload, and that Anti-ship fighters carry an even more massive payload of missiles or single-shot torpedo that can penetrate PDS fire at short range. This would push Anti-ship fighters out of range of bubble carriers (18 mass in hangars to fit a single flight of AS fighters) Another possibility is to allow PDS to fire as a supershort range CIWS and intercept the missiles from the fighters, with each PDS allowed to fire twice, with hits negating one hit from attacking fighters. PDS can either fire in regular or CIWS mode but not both in one turn. As I see it, the problem is not that a huge number of fighters can take out a single ship, regardless of size, but the fact that they can do it over and over again, as long as their endurance lasts. This is really no different than a mega-ship armed with a dozen class-4 beams and half a dozen fire-controls. There is no FB ship that could easily stand up to this, and fleet of ships is just going to be picked off one, two or six a turn until it's vaporized. The limiting factor is that beams mass cost increases exponentially, which tends to put an upper limit on the size of "an indivdiual weapon" but does nothing to cap the overall number of weapons. So what keeps people from building super-massive hyper dreadnaughts armed with ridiculous numbers of class-3 or class 4 beams/rail guns? Nothing. It's just boring to play against such ships. There are certain counters than can be used - bubble fleets of needle beams to knock out FC's and drives, giant fleets of fighters, giant fleets of fast torpedo boats. Beams and rail guns are limited by fire controls - perhaps, as has been suggested before, that fighters need to be co-ordinated by a separate Strike control similar to a Fire Con, to allow fighters to attack a target. (PSB would be that the mothership's computers are more able to find a gap in coverage than the onboard fighter systems). One SC per target for fighters operating from that ship. FIghters attacking without the benfit of a SC are fired at with a +1 bonus by defending systems. Cost for an SC would be the same as a FC, but they are not interchangeable.
