Has anyone got a good resource for military ranks for the major languages
(English French Italian German Spanish Russian
Chinese(S)Japanese Korean)? Trying to figure out what the FSE would
call a private, for instance, or what the ESU would name a platoon sergeant.

Here's something you'll really like:)

http://www.rankinsignia.info/

Basically the ranks and insignia of most countries in the world, not only
military, but also police and correctional personnel. They even have rank
insignia for Star Trek!

Yup, you gotta love a site that has the ranks and insignia of the Salvation
Army:) Reminds me of Austin Powers: "the militant wing of the Salvation Army".

I'm working on ranking for a Norse based star system, and I'm not sure it can
help me yet..

I came across this site a while back, only I'm not sure how useful it is

as the only insignia I'm familiar with (St John Ambulance Australia) is both
very incomplete, and incorrect. Someone else familiar with other organisations
might be able to provide another datapoint. Hopefully SJA

is an outlier.

Oh really? Hmm... I don't know. The PLA Army insignia as of 2000 matches
another source I have, and the US Army seems to be correct. Maybe their info
sources on charity organizations aren't as good as the military ones.
