The Peace of Utrecht (or whichever agreement it was that banned them internationally) was aimed at stopping the recruitment of whole units of Swiss soldiers to serve in foreign armies. The Swiss mercenary Pikemen regiments were the scourge of Europe at one point - they beat everybody - and were banned because of it. In the modern context, I imagine the agreement would be taken to mean that you can't hire regiments of the Swiss army...

This is from a souvenir that a friend of mine brought back from a trip to England recently: Blair castle, dating from the 13th century in Perthshire, is the ancient home of the Dukes of Atholl. It's Scotland's most visited historic house. It has the distinction of having Britain's only private army, "The Atholl Highlanders". Anyone want to project what "The Atholl Highlanders" could look like in the NAC GZG future history?

G'day guys, > Anyone want to project what "The Atholl Highlanders" could look like in Probably not much different to the hairy bunch of hooligans they are now ;) But then I probably have a skewed opinion seeings I used to live a stones throw away from them a while back. Seriously though, last thing I heard there was talk of them being disbanded as there's only 50 of them now and the Duke was scaling down his estate and spending more time in the city. Even before that they seemed to do little beyond trot out at official occasions and do the kilted run at the Blair games... But I guess anything could happen in the next 200 years. Cheers Beth

This sounds interesting. Is there somewhere on the web where I can find more info on them? God bless, - Buddy
