The archives are useful if you know (roughly) when and what your looking for

We really ought to get our act together on the FAQ front here. I'm willing to
take up the FT FAQ, need someone else for DS2 and SG2, plus some helpers are a
good idea and prevent people being excluded, plus it usually too much for one
person anyway.

I've seen a lot of good mini disjoint FT FAQ's on Brian's and KR's pages and
several other people (apologies for not remembering names) just need to pull
it all together. I've got a www site, we just need to coordinate. Then we post
FAQ pointers
on a monthly basis to the list. Opinions/help on this requested.

Well, I put my hand up (rather tentatively) for the SG2FAQ...

I have visions of this document being waaaaaaaaaaay too long..:)

What I need from everyone are the Questions Most Frequently Asked.:)

I think it should be stated that for all the FAQs they should not be looked
upon, designed as or thought of as archives for the mailing list. A FAQ is for
"FREQUENTLY" asked questions, those sort that when someone new to the list
pops up and asks, everyone else groans because it's been answered fifty times
before. They should be designed to answer as many questions as possible a
newbie may have about the games. Perhaps they should also be used as pointers
(possibly) to where questions of a more detailed nature may be answered (the
Unofficial pages, the list, etc).

At least I know what to start the SG2FAQ with...

"What the hell is Stargrunt II?":)

Yes I agree a 640kb file is over-kill IMHO, there are some real monsters
out there

Thats exactly the project vision. A troll of the archives should help in
finding the candidate FAQ's. There are quite a few OQ (obscure questions) that
need to be filtered out.

> They should be designed to answer as many questions as

Absolutely, plus a feedback loop as people may have a better or different but
equally valid answer.

> At least I know what to start the SG2FAQ with...

Where can I get Stargrunt II?

Is it correctly SG2 or SGII? (duck)

As for the format of the things I find HTML better if it has links to the
questions from a TOC but plain text is adequate.

Now how would we go about getting 'Official' status Jon?

Actually, as someone coming back to the list, I would pefer to see a
definitive database of rules clarifications, modifications, new rules et al.

While a FAQ has merrit, once the answer "What is SG/FT/DS" is answered
, most questions will be "How does such and such rule used".

If someone has a question, we refer them to the database, and failing that,
have a nutting out session on the net.

all platforms, you have to get server side which just isn't practical for me.

if you know of a free all platform database with such a front end then it
would be worth evaluating it without doubt.

Oh, I forgot to plug:

FTGZG Mailing List Archives back to the middle of June 1996. If you know
roughly when it is, you can find it. Otherwise, you can download the entire
month, and take your chances with egrep. (8-)

(Thanks for the reminder Mark!)

One thing I've always wanted to do (but I've never had the time) is
to go through the archives, and pull together a 'best-of' type of
digest. This may be the excuse I need. (That, plus overhauls as per what
people want the archives to become.)

Thanks,

Personally, I'd like to see a list FAQ: What is GZG, what is each of the
separate systems(I'd suggest a fairly simple description, with directions to
particular system FAQ's for details), what are some of the
resources(especially web) available...

Separate system FAQ's are appropriate: certain rules DO seem to get most of
the questions, other questions are more esoteric. A complete rule/errata
database would be wonderful, but not a FAQ, methinks.

At the beginning, this all might be small enough for one document, but I think
the hierarchy makes sense, and if the dingus gets too big, can be broken into
separate components.

Is this sensible, or am I just an old, legacy-computing thinker?

Whoops!

Of course, the list-general FAQ(part) should have instructions on how to
sign on, off, location of archives, etc.

AND A STERN WARNING TO PRINT OUT AND KEEP IN A VERY SAFE PLACE. ;->=

What I think would be best would be a Meta-FAQ.

This gives the most basic details (addresses of GZG, GeoHex, Eureka; a few
details about this mailing list; list of common abbreviations; list of the
most essential websites and pointers to where the FT, DS
and SG FAQs can be found - along with the most important pieces of
info: the names and e-mail addresses of those responsible for keeping
the FAQs updated.)

This Meta-FAQ could be sent automatically to each new subscriber to
this list (with the whole list getting a copy when it changes).

As a general point FAQs really should always be available in ASCII text
format, with HTML as well if possible.

Another problem with a database is that you cannot easily printout the entire
list of questions and answers.

I think HTML... at least, I shall be converting the original file to HTML.
Personally, I think _several_ formats of the same thing are useful -
HTML for people who want the links and formatting, text for those who just
want the info,.doc, whatever..

Interesting enough, an idea I've been chucking around in my head... there are
sites for individual games, but there's no ONE site for ALL of them. I
know, I know, the Official site (when/if) would/could be that, but Jon

more important/wanted things to do...

Hmm... CGI searchable... rules database... attached FAQ... updates...

To be fair to CE, after a final email to them yesterday they have now said
the cheque is in the mail, so this one seems to be resolved - but it HAS
taken about six months and many reminders..... Problems getting paid for
things like this are endemic to the industry on both sides of the pond, it
seems, and is the main reason why I am normally very wary of doing writing
or other work for anything except my own publications - I made an
exception for B5 simply because I am a fan!

Doesn't surprise me, but that's just downright sad. I guess it's the
difference between game companies (who may or may not have full fledged
management teams and finance departments) and some of the
hi-tech firms - If we don't do business fast, we lose contracts. We
have to pay suppliers, subcontractors, and employees on time or bad things
happen....

Hope the check arrives reasonably expediently.:)
