Hello All: Stopped by the local game store and low and behold the EF
Sourcebook had come in. I quickly snatched up a copy and perused it. The
interior art looks quite good: (e.g. They've got a great diagram of a Hyperion
CA and an interesting set of pictures of the evolution of the Starfury.) Of
course the number one reason why I would get them would
be Jon's FT/B5 rules. Since I pre-ordred it at GenCon, I had hoped that
it would arrive in today's mail. No such luck. Perhaps tomorrow.
> Of course the number one reason why I would get them would
I called them about delivery dates on Tuesday, they said they were shipping
Wednesday, so fingers crossed for tomorrow!
Ok, time to play catch-up for the new guy on the list. Correct me if I
am wrong, but I assume the Source book is for Babylon% Wars???.
Also what is this about a FT/B5 rule set for sale. Whos ship do you have
to blowup to get a set, and who much. After all the trip from Calif. to GenCon
ain't in the budget.

No. Its a supplement for the Chameleon Eclectic game "The Babylon project".
Essentially it should be for roleplaying but Jon Tuffley was contacted
(probably not the right word) to create a ship combat system for the game that
would work in the B5 universe. Thats why must of us on the list want a copy of
it. Frnakly the roleplaying game isn't up to much otherwise. At least from
what i've seen and heard of it. The system (I hope) should follow Jons basic
style of Keeping it simple and not going the B5 wars way of things (psuedo SFB
in my opinion).

Same here unfortunately. I presume Chameleon Eclectic could sort you out on
that one.

Nope. This is a source book for The Babylon Project, which is the role playing
game in the Babylon 5 universe.

In this supplement, to The Babylon Project, there are included rules for
spaceship combat written by Jon Tuffley. Jon happens to be the one
who wrote Full Thrust. So this is the FT/B5 rule set that is for sale.
I have not seen this supplement yet, but word has it that the spaceship combat
rules are based on the Full Thrust rules. I can hardly wait to get my hands on
them.
Enjoy,

The Earth Force Source Book is the first supplement to The Babylon Project
role-playing game and is not connected to the Babylon 5 Wars game.
The Earthforce Sourcebook is for use with "The Babylon Project" by
Chameleon Eclectic. It contains a Full Thrust based ship-to-ship combat
system & ship designs by Jon Tuffley (Ground Zero Games) that can be used in
conjunction with TBP's roleplaying system.
Most of us on the list want it for the B5 conversion so we can play full
blooded B5 battles (we currently use unofficial rulesets, but most of them are
very good!)

I've played a couple of games of it and I can say I'm not too overwhelmed by
it. It seems you have to do an awful lot of damage to functionally disable
ships, and fighters seems very unbalanced vs ships. I think I'll
probably end up using it for small ship/fighter combat (the fighter
minis are quite nice) as i'm not wild about thier resolution of ship to ship
combat.

Give them a call on 800-435-9930, give them your credit card no. and hey
presto you can go to the ball, oops wrong story. Seriously, I ordered directly
from CE since my local stores are (an understatement) a bit bad. Miniature
gaming won't work in NY they tell me, apparently no one has the space, except
for GW stuff which they are more than happy to sell me!
Good hunting
Wow!, Thanks for all the reply's. On a side note I was just given the
interactive B5 CD-ROM from Sierra. The audio CD that came with it is
great. The interactive CD has specs and video for 30 ships (if you count a
jump gate as one). For the unofficial rules type this is a greate resource.
Other then those two high points, the interactive CD is pretty bad. I'm glade
I didn't pay for it.

Do you mean the EarthForce Sourcebook rules or the B5 wars rules?
As it is, what you say would fit very well with the B5 universe way of doing
things. In the B5 universe a ship attacked by fighters without cover
is in deep trouble - a squadron of starfuries could probably take out a
carrier in quite short order. They'd take heavy casualties doing it but they'd
manage it. Basically, in B5, offensive technology is significantly more
advanced than defensive technology, so a fighter is a bigger threat than it's
size would signify.
Hmmm.. anyone got rules for Missiles in B5?I have a sudden itching to recreate
'Endgame' now I've seen it on a big TV with surround sound...

You prolly have to wait for the Narn-Centauri Conflict module. I
understand there's supposed to be a missile boat in there (am I remembering
correctly, Warleader W'Kan?)

I agree with you on the B5 perspective, however, the rules for fighters are
somewhat distorted, yes the fighters will maul a carrier in no time at all,
however, the fighters thamselves take a ridiculous amount of damage before
thier integrity suffers. All you have to do is look at a typical output from
the B5 wars mailing list to see the comments about relative fighter strenght.
For me they are way too powerful compared to the ships, and the ships
themseleves seem to be a (with perhaps the exception of the Minbari Cruiser)
undergunned. I had this impression of the BREWs of Earthforce being much more
powerful than are portrayed in the game. Another thing which really does not
work for me is the effective engagement ranges, because of recharge times fo
rthe big weapons you only realy get to use them a couple of times in a game so
so far I've been 'saving' them for most effect, most effct being almost point
blank range. I realise when I'm using model ships that the scales are
massively distorted but the feel of the game goes awry for me when I use
miniatures as they usually only really fire effectively from a few hexes away.
the other thing which really does not work for me is the hex based movement,
the artificial erstrictions on turns imposed by hexes really p****s me off, if
i hd more time i would
klude some hex-less fix together, but as it is there are just too many
things which irk me right now so i'm just not that enthusiatic about playing
more games soon. Additionally considering the imminent arrival (please mail
gods, let it be today!!!) of the EFSB I guess the B5 wars box may end up
gathering dust for a while before I get it out again.
