Subject: [DSII] VTOL stands

Since the ingenuity of the list members has awed me on more than one occasion,
I thought that I’d throw this out there:

How do you guys paint/mount VTOL miniatures for DSII? What kinds of
stands do you use? Do you paint them on the stands, or attach them to
something first?

(Normally, when I’m painting a figure I just use this wonderful stuff
called “U-
Knead-It” to attach it to a Popsicle stick. The stuff holds it firmly,
but the
miniature can simply be pulled off when you finish it -- no messing
about having to remove small bits of glue. Doesn’t work quite so well when
you need to paint the underside, as well)

I’m trying to find a happy medium here. I prefer clear stands, because they
look the best on the table. However, they also tend to be a bit fragile,
they’re a pain-in-the-butt to store with the tanks, and it can be
difficult to *not* screw it up while painting the miniature.

A removable plastic stand might be the best way to go, but I’m not sure of
the best way to go about that. Frankly, I’m hoping that hearing the brilliant
ideas of others may bring enlightenment.

I take regular slotta-bases and cut the stick in half.
I paint it black (while seperate from the mini) and then flock the bottom.
After painting the mini I file the
spot where it will attach bare _and_ file the top of
the stick bare. I attach it with 2 part epoxy putty I picked up at the auto
store. Much stronger than
knead-a-tite.

So far I haven't lost any to breakage, although I have had to repair a mini
after it was knocked off the table.

I personally like the GZG VTOL stands. They're a bit bulky but very stable. I
don't glue my VTOL's to their stands, in case I want to "land" them.

Use a bit on top of the stand itself, especially if there's a deep enough hole
in the bottom of the VTOL.

If you go with hard wire or metal stands, you can always paint the base ground
colored and the post sky.

G'day,

Derek uses thin brass rod (painted black), into a plasticard base. Works well,
no breakages as yet and not glaringly obvious.

I use the usual clear plastic stands, fixed to the model before painting. I've
never had any real problems with getting paint on the models, even if it does
happen it's likely to be at the top of the post which is going to be invisible
when the model's on the table.
