I have been thinking to finish off a brigade of infantry for DSII, but since
that amounts to a lot of figures... I have been looking around. I also liked
the special weapons and officer looking ones. Has anyone used GHQ's
infantry - the single figs - for DS? Do they look too much like they are
from WWII or the current era, rather than the future?

umm... good luck:) a brigade of infantry will be in the range of 1000 up to
several thousand men, depending on the organisation. That's a lot of figures.
The main problem with GHQ figures that you'll find, is that they are too
small. They are, as far as I could tell, actually in the proper 1/285
scale. Figures from the other manufacturers that are popular, like the
GZG or G*mes W*rksh*p ones, are much larger than true 1/285. The GHQ
figures will not fit together with them. Also, the GHQ figures (at least the
ones I've seen that are cast in large blocks) have very poor
detail and are too thin, so they break/bend very easily. I'm not sure
if they'll be good for wargaming. But that's just my opinion.

You're right, I meant battalion.

The size may be unfortunate, but explains why you get so many for the cost.

Thanks for the insight. Just the kind of thing for which I was looking.

I had forgotten all about Adler.
How are theirs? And which line is best (mid-tech, marines, etc.)?

I have gone for the Dark-Star marines, coz I din't want to try and paint

faces, they are pretty nice. good level of detail (a lot smaller than the GZG
IIRC) some nice support weapons too.

Noel,

Dark Star figures are above average and Heroics and Ros WW2 and modern figs
are good too. a good paint job and no one should really notice (or care) that
the helmet looks a little German....

as far as scale goes, you might want to go with one stand = 1 platoon. then
you can reasonable play a brigade-level engagement, but it will still be
a long day!

re: [DSII] infantry figuresThanks, David. I am not familiar with Heroics &
Ros. No one carries them around here. I go see what I can find out about them.

I already got caught on my brigade mis-type. I imagine it could be fun -
in
a long grueling kind of way - but it was not what I meant for unit size.
I
have a company and am looking to get 2-3 more to raise up to a
battalion.

I found the discussion of DSII infantry figures very interesting but was
amazed that no one recommended GZG's own infantry packs. There are many packs
most of which are interchangeable and have a wide range of positions. I
consider them among the best figures available and used them to
replace/supplement my original epic infantry collection.
If you haven't seen them, then check out the following pages.

and

There are some GW figures mixed in and a few conversions but the majority are
GZG figures picked and mixed from various packs and with a little head
swapping mixed in..?=0)

FYI, according to a mention in MiniWargs or WI recently, Heroics and
Ros has just been sold - the chap who has been running them for years
has (AFAIK) retired and sold all the busines to NAVWAR in Ilford, London (who
have been major H&R stockists for many years and do a load of their own stuff
too). I assume Navwar probably have a web presence somewhere.

combo DS post:

np Jon. I use a lot of Heroic and Ros for WW2, but they double over nicely for
some DS variety. even the GHQ tanks from WW2 and modern can fit with
the DS line. I like the Wirbelwind (4-barrel 20mm) for DS AA and
anti-infantry duty -- very nasty!

Bob: no doubt about it, I like the DS figs the best, but I thought folks were
looking for other types for variety of pose and style.

Tony: thanks for posting the NavWar site. it's been a long while since I
ordered H&S figs, and I will be wanting some more here soon. I just didn't
know where to start until you provided a link. thanks!

Thanks. Good pics. They are a good way to look at the battalion breakdown.

Good advice, and I am leaning back towards GZG. I was really looking for
options, both to see if something more cost effective was out there and to
provide some unit variety other than paint scheme.

Everyone is kicking out some good feedback on this thread, so I have to say
thanks again to everyone.

I have used Scotia's infantry for DS2. These are nice, but I do not remember
how much variation is in the figures. I do not remember any SAW or missile
equiped figures, but this may just be my not paying enough attention. DS2
fairly abstracts infantry except for special weapons teams.

The minis that GZG puts out for Dirtside are really good too, and they are
pretty easy to get. I'm building (gradually that is) a battle group of NAC
troops that I'll field in a year or two! They are mounted 2 or 4 to a stand
and have some nice details that show up after you paint them.

The GHQ's minis are great looking (I have a few for my early Desert 40 Brits
and Italians), but they don't have all the bells and whistles you
would want in modern/sci-fi troops... like missile launchers, body
armor, high-tech assault rifles, and so on. But if you're into WWII as
well... a group of American, German, or Russian troops wouldn't look to far
out of place and you can still use them in WWII fighting too. Go to their web
page and check out the stills they have (most of them are
painted).  http://www.ghqmodels.com

Just wondering here, why are you building such a huge force? I've never
fielded more than 10 or so units in Dirtside- can't imagine fielding
such a huge force at once. How many units is that?. A triangular
brigade with 3 bn w/3 coys....that's something like 27 units of infantry
alone... than you've got supporting tank, apc, assorted afvs, arty, heavy
weapons platoons... and don't forget the air support! Maybe up to 50 units!!!
Got a GYM somewhere to set them all up?;)

Scotia do missle teams in their 6mm SF range - they're quite nice single
castings, two guys and a tripod missle launcher on one base.

They also do very nice PA and infantry walkers - I have an entire
assault
battalion w/ supports waiting to be painted one of these eons.

My Scotia catalog is in the bottom of a box somewhere, so I can't provide
model numbers/names/etc.
