I'm trying to rebuild a Dirtside force from the ground up, and this time I
want to put some thought into it.. I'm interested in some input on tank size
classes. Would I be better of using a mix of tank sizes from size 2 to 5 or is
a force of all large tanks, like a Hammers Slammers force, better? Does anyone
have any opinions on this issue? That's a stupid question. Everybody has
opinions on that.

Hi David, the real question is really what do you want your force to do? If
recon is not an issue and the force primary role is to be assault then by all
means an all Size 4 or 5 force would be the way to go. If you want a well
rounded force then balance your vehicles to suit the tasking.

Then again if you wish to model on a 'real world' approach you will probably
want to minimise the variations in vehicle chassis to simplify supply and
maintenance.

Base it on a theme, eg make your force like Hammer's Slammers, battletech
'mech raiding force, planetary defence force, bug horde or WWII formation
or WWIII/Modern American.
Develop a theme and stick to it. It's more interesting than trying to develop
the ultimate force.

My main battle tanks are either size 3 or 4, with a couple of 5's, but my
reconn and forward observers are size 1's. Harder to hit but a better chance
to get in close for those arty strikes. David

I have a few different type of forces, a low tec tracked force (GW
epic, there cheap and I picked it up at shows at 50%+ off), another
tracked force (GZG figs), and a high tec grav force using brighter colors
(hey, we're bad!) They are using the famous happy face as a unit symbol. I am
planning on attending Historicon on Friday to look for any sf figs. My modern
DS2 modifications are on hold until I graduate from
school 2 months and counting! hoody hoo.... If anybody wants a copy
let me know but I ask for any feedback because they are still in work. David

The best tradeoffs (unsurprisingly) come around the size 3 area. I've found
that my size 5 tanks in DS always eat *BOOM* chits, so I've personally been
put off the larger vehicles except when necessary (heavy artillery or Superior
ZAD). My favorite vehicle which has good kill potential (and low points cost)
are EPIC whirlwinds.
Size 3, armour 2, 2 x SLAM/3. At long range, it becomes very effective
against light vehicles or combined armour/infantry units.
