I've just started playing DSII & I'm wondering which direction is better for
tanks, using multiple guns, or only one big main gun.
One design I've done has a triple DFFG/2 turret (size4), & another has
SLAM/5 turret (size3).
Could anyone help with their experience of the effectiveness of each
philosophy? Also, do you roll once to hit with multiple mounts, or roll
separately for each weapon?

I don't think its possible to put a Slam 5 on a size 3 vehicle. Sure size 5
weapon x3 is 15, but the max permissable weapon is supposed to be one size
larger than the class. So on your size 3 tank you could mount a size 4 Slam
and have 3 space points left over for aux systems.

One rolls once for a given shot. Got three RFAC 2s linked, roll once, pull 2
chits three times. One can only fire like weapons at the same time.

As far as multiple weapon mounts go, Go for the largest gun possible. You
generally want to get a big group of chits. The main benefit of a smaller
weapon in multiple mounts works like this:

I have a class 4 Slam Carrier. It has 2 size 4 Slams. If I had once size 5
Slam, I could draw 5 chits versus a target's armour. (assume I'm shooting a
big tank) With the two size 4 Slams, I get to draw 4 chits twice. Total 8
chances to pick a boom. Thats a good trade off. However there is a law of
diminishing returns by trying this with three Slam 3's. There I only get 9
tries, but in three groups of three. Not decent odds to get some big reds and
yellows to bust the armour.

The only time you get to add the pulls for chits is with DFO's and
infantry firefights/APSWs.

My favorite combo is an MDC/4 (turrretted) with back up systems and
superior fire control. Excellent range, good chit draw, good lethality.

I've found that backup systems have been way too expensive. You can usually
buy a whole new tank for the cost of equipping two tanks with backup systems.

Roll to-hit and draw separately for each weapon. They must be fired at
the
same target unless you have multi-FC.

Whether a big gun is better than multi-guns depends on how you employ
them, what you target is, and what the terrain is like. I don't think anyone
weapon or setup is best for all situations. That's what makes the game fun and
challenging.
