Oerjan makes an interesting point about systems for specialist elements taking
up space. They don't in SG2, but no one assumes you'll haul a
GMS/L
with you I don't think. The precendent you could easily use is the size it is
expected to take on a vehicle (2 space). This plus 2 crew would equal 4
spaces and thus fit with DS/2. In fact, if you wanted a more realistic
crew of 3, I'd think it would take 5 points.
However, SAWs (as they are in SG2) wouldn't take extra space. An APSW
(tripod HMG or tripod AGL) might well take a space. A GMS/P? Doubtful...
that could easily (well more or less) be carried by the infantry trooper
without recourse to a separate space (IMO).
I think the idea of using the following capacities for those that use both
games makes sense:
rifle/SAW gunner 1
PA 2
GMS/P gunner 1
GMS/L system 2 (I assume this would also be correct for
a LAD)
Tripod HMG/AGL/APSW 1
Crew for GMS/L 3 guys @ 1 each
crew for HMG/AGL/APSW 3 guys @ 1 each
I realize in DS2, it doesn't really matter if you have 3 or 5 guys in your
rifle unit (a 6 man NSL squad could be 2 3 man elements in DS2 for example or
a 10 man squad could be 2 5 man elements), but when you get to the SG2 level,
it does make a difference.
Anyway, it isn't a major hassle. It just makes sense to have designs that work
for both, and having elements take up space more compatible with the SG2
method of calculation seems wise.
Some comments to Tom's post (which I mostly agree with):
> Oerjan makes an interesting point about systems for specialist
Tony certainly seemed to assume so <g>
> The precendent you could easily use is the size it is expected to take
Many of today's GMS/L-equivalents only have 2-man crews. Oh, it's
always nice to have a third guy around to carry extra ammo, provide
security etc - but he's usually not *necessary*.
> However, SAWs (as they are in SG2) wouldn't take extra space.
Which is why DSII doesn't track SAWs at all. Modern SAWs are basically
standard automatic rifles with bipods and extra-large magazines anyway

Yes.
> A GMS/P? Doubtful...
Again yes. IMO the GMS/Ps are included in the IAVR category in DS2.
> I think the idea of using the following capacities for those that use
At least for the ones I've seen, yes.
> Tripod HMG/AGL/APSW 1
See the comment above. If anything the crew requirements will go down in the
future, so I think it's pretty safe to say 2 men per heavy infantry weapon.
Later,
Hi,
This is a much better idea than what I was doing. I agree with Oerjan about
probably only needing two crew for the special weapons. I have to admit that I
hadn't thought it out at quite the same level that Oerjan has. A the time I
just decided to go with the more fine grained model of SG2 (at least until I
can make a size 2.4 vehicle,) that at least felt consistent.
It actually won't make any difference in my vehicle designs: none of my
transports are that cramped.

One thing to keep in mind for GMS/L, class-1 rfac etc is that they are
treated as a squad member when determining casualties (it has an armour die
of d8). Check out the ground-mount rules (can't remember the page
number). This sort of intimates that it would also take a crew space.
