I picked up a useful little book yesterday- "The British Army- a pocket
guide 2002-2003", Charles Heyman (Ed.), Pen & Sword Books Ltd.,
Barnsley.

It has sections on all branches of the Army, tail as well as teeth, with notes
on equipment, Orbats, training regimes etc. Not at all bad for £4.95

In the section on infantry, and specifically the Armoured Infantry Battalion,
I was interested to see this: "In response to the recent pressure for the
formation of Assault Pioneer Platoons, the 3rd rifle platoon in the 3rd rifle
company has been moved to the Manoeuvre Support Company amd trained as Assault
Pioneers"

Ok, spiffy. I presume that is because previously only Light Infantry Bats had
pioneers?

This is a half-step. Leaving your 3rd company short a
platoon limits your maneuver options a bit, unless you're going to do things
the stupid way and leave
that platoon double-tasked, which ends up with
inadequate training time for either of their jobs.
