They'r more vulnerable, but you might try establishing house rules that make
loading and unloading open-topped APC's quicker than for normal, or for
allowing effective infantry fire from the back of them. I don't know about
realism, but in terms of playability it's doable and helps justify even
bothering with open-topped vehicles.

I've been thinking that an open topped AFV, is much like a
vehicle-portable
trench. So maybe, have the infantry count as dug-in versus infantry
attack? But in open versus artillery

What do you think?

This is also how I'm coming to view them.

Sounds very plausible... this would allow enemy infantry to fire at them

while in the vehicle, but still give them some protection.

Other ideas?
