Subject: [DS2] ADS/PDS vs SLAM

Greetings,
Do PDS/ADS work against SLAMs? It is not mentioned in the rules. I see
the following options:

1) ADS/PDS do not work against SLAMs because the SLAM is an area attack
(like an artillery attack). This also explains why ECM & Stealth is not
effective vs SLAM (p. 8)

2) Use the AFV's Fire Control for the SLAM guidance and resolve as GMS.

3) As #2 but roll for a number of attacks equal to the size of the SLAM.
That is, a SLAM/3 would count as 3 missiles (each draw 1 chit damage),
SLAM/4 as 4 missiles, and SLAM/5 as 5 missiles.

4) ADS/PDS do not have a noticable effect on SLAM attacks. The sheer
volume of missiles in a SLAM attack makes it impossible for a ADS/PDS
system to intercept all of the missiles. This also explains why Stealth is not
effective vs SLAM (p. 8)

I favor option 1.

1 & 4. No. SLAMs are area munitions, it's like trying to destroy a box of
marbles with a pea shooter before it drops on your head. Its either
MIRV warheads, multiple missiles (30+) or similar PSB.

No, because SLaM overloads or saturates PDS and ADS. See page 9.

SLaM isn't an area effect weapon like artillery, though it can hit multiple
targets in an area. See page 9 and 30.

No. SLaM are unguided missiles and are high volume. Therefore ECM and PDS are
ineffective. Recall that versus GMS, ADS fire control is reduced by one die
type for each GMS, in excess of one, fired at by the ADS. See page 31. A dozen
SLaM missiles fired in one burst from a SLaM system reduces the ADS fire
control to nothing.

Interesting as an alternative mode for SLaM. Perhaps as a house rule?

> 4) ADS/PDS do not have a noticable effect on SLAM attacks. The sheer
Stealth is effective versus SLaM. Page 9 is slightly in error, I believe. This
line should read something like: "... and as they are unguided they cannot be
'spoofed' by ECM; this
makes the SLaM pack a very effective weapon versus even high-tech
enemies." The "and Stealth" has been removed in this correction.

Jon (GZG) made a reply to this question in April 1998. My question and his
reply is below:
