Just a quick survey.
What type and size of buildings do you use for:
DS games SG 15mm games SG 25mm games
Just say whether it's a pill box or small civilian dwelling etc and the size
of that building in cm's.
Thanks

Haven't yet.
Well, I was a lot of help. :-/
SG II 25mm
Do not have but would use:
Civilian dwellings, sort of research post/colonial start up.
Say 10cm x 10cm by 4cm or so tall, or odd shapes with a max of 12 cm frontage.
Preferably (but
not a requirement) either modular or with some simple gangway/enclosed
hallway that could connect them.
In that sense a series of box shapes would do fine.
Removable roofs a plus but also not a requirement.
Drawn on detail is actually good as it does not get in the way of the figures
themselves.
You are welcome and thanks for asking!

No that was a great help, I put a tick next to the scenery deprived box
:)
But why pray tell have you not built my modular apartment block or the factory
and hangar set I have available? Well explain yourself! or are you not allowed
to use knives or sisscors in order to cut them out:)

I have just started getting back into DS2 after a long period without playing
it. I have apartment buildings from the original Space Marine set, and I have
some old resin 1/285 scale WW2 buildings. Other than that, none.
> SG 15mm games
Still painting 15mm figures. The games I have played I haven't used any
buildings. I've thought of making some 15mm buildings based on the article on
the Miniatures Pages about using Super Sculpey. These, though, would probably
be American Civil War era, or maybe WW2.
> SG 25mm games
I have a number of resin Kryomek buildings. These look like military buildings
with joining corridor sections. I also have 4 Void pillboxes which don't look
too bad next to the Kryomek stuff.
I also have a Crusader29 generic gothic building I plan to use for a
mausoleum... or maybe a warehouse. I'm looking at maybe getting some Ainsty
buildings, too. They have "street level" store fronts and such. No need to
make really tall buildings if you only really intend to use the ground floor
anyway.
I don't have any city type buildings (ruins or otherwise) in 15mm or 25mm
scale, though I have thought of building some. I have the foamcore available,
I just haven't thought of a good way of storing it yet.

Well, I didn't know you had any available (or if I did, I'd forgotten!). Are
these paper sets that you either print on card stock, or print on paper and
then glue on to card? If so, I'm not a big fan of paper buildings. I find they
are hard to paint properly. I only recently got access to a colour printer,
and it's not an exceptionally good one. So, for me, paper buildings always
look like, well, paper buildings...

water...yet; I've been thinking of a set-up to use real running water,
but it would require more of that time stuff I am lacking in)

1) because I just looked at 'em today (nice!!), and 2) I'm not sure my little
rocket scientist brain could figger out how to put most of 'em together (okay,
okay, I haven't actually *tried* yet; just looked at what you have and
thought...how would this be put together....nope, rubix cube warning, don't go
there!)

Well, there's that, too. But I didn't want to say.

Most come out of my Modern and WW2 collections. Nothing bigger than
5-6cm along each side. I prefer larger buildings to be
in modular sections so that each bit can be destroyed individually.

Waaaay back when (about 1990) I built a huge collection of buildings and
scenery from artboard and plastic card for a display game - enough to
cover a 8x6 foot table. The largest building (which hasn't survived the
years) was about 80x50x30cm. Most were in the 20-30cm range, some a bit
smaller. There are a couple of pictures here
[http://www.maidstone-wargamers.org.uk/ShowGames/SciFi15/index.html]. I
have great intentions of taking more pics when my digital camera returns from
repair (they quoted 10 working days, so I don't expect I'll see it
for a month :-/)
> > SG 25mm games
At the moment we use 20mm (HO) scale scenery from our WW2 collections (mostly
Kibri and Faller model railway buildings), having no dedicated 25mm SF
scenery.
> Just a quick survey.
Scratch build plastic card buildings in the same style. Some metal buildings
(irregular IIRC) mostly small cottages 3cm x 4cm by 3cm Resin buildings from
an unknown source (tower blocks about the size of the ones that you got with
Space Marine) and a very "Russian" railway station.
> SG 15mm games
> SG 25mm games
Mostly about 10cm x 15cm x 10cm
Kryomek Sci-fi buildings (already mentioned by Allan)
Scratch build plastic card buildings mostly about the size of a yoghurt pot! A
"reactor building" based on a piece of packing from a toy basketball set which
is about 25cm long, 15cm wide and 15cm high.

DS:
- Ogre Miniatures Command Posts
- Terra Formas??? small dome building (resin or plaster)
SG (15mm):
- None yet, but I plan to convert some round Christmas Cookie tins into
buildings. I also plan to use some large, orange, translucent, medicine pill

A friend has a boxful of those quite nice GW Epic highrises, including some of
the old ones that are actually quite different looking.
> SG 15mm games
My main area - I've made a boxful of 15mm buildings from card and
foamcore, ranging from a big warehouse that's about 6x8 inches to some very
small storage buildings only about 1.5x2 inches, plus a dozen or so pieces of
industrial terrain, tank farms, refinery bits and so on, most scratchbuilt and
some commercial resin.
> SG 25mm games
All my industrial stuff will work in 25mm as well as 15mm; I'm still
building a pair of pizza-box based FMA skirmish units, but that's all
we've got that's designed for 25mm.
The problem our group has is that I'm basically the only one who builds
scenery! If I don't build it, it isn't on the table, with the exception of a
couple of nice buildings my brother made...
This has the odd result that my scenery has been to more conventions than I
have, because Jaime keeps borrowing it for cons I can't make it to! If you've
played a 15mm SG2 game with Jaime in the Pacific Northwest in the last year or
two, yes that was my scenery, and no, I wasn't there...:>
Grousing over... I do like your 6mm buildings and 25mm corridor stuff, Germ.
I've got all the pdfs saved, and building some of them is fairly high on that
infamous 'to be done' list!

I'll second this - basic SF buildings are either expensive resin or
scratchbuilt. Some card ones would be a nice compromise.

Sounds good - I'd fire up Photoshop and try something myself, but my
free time just vanished recently...
Thanks for all the replies. I did find it interesting that a lot of people
scratch build their own scenery. I was expecting more people to have bought
resin buildings especially for DSII.
I suppose the other question I should have asked is whether people actually
like buildings on the battlefield or see them as a specific plot device to be
used occasionally.
As to the questions about the paper buildings I have done. Yes they are
designed to be printed out in colour and glued together. I'm trying to get
pictures of the finished articles up on my website when I do you'll be able to
judge for yourselves whether they look too papery or not. I am also
considering making buildings in other scales. Probably 15mm first.

I have used "Dirt Cheap Starships" to good effect for a FMAS Star Wars
scenario.

Buildings are plot specific and many of my games do not feature any. Still
things like raids on labs, find out what happened to Research Outpost Alpha,
etc to require buildings to be convincing.
> As to the questions about the paper buildings I have done. Yes they
I use quite a few paper buildings in my Western games and am quite happy with
them.
Though I've not built any of yours they look like they would go together well
and look great once constructed.
Folks should also keep in mind that there are many ways to enhance the
appearance of card buildings. For one thing mounting walls on matt board or
foam core can do a lot to avoid a flimsy appearance. So can a dedicated
textured base. Of course once you start reinforcing card buildings you can not
longer just fold them flat when not needed.
Another trick is to add detailed bits to the building. Using balsa to frame
doors and windows is one of the easiest things to do here. Once painted to
blend in the balsa goes far towards creating a more 3D look.
Finally one of the simplest ways to improve the look of the things it to use
marker or a fine brush to color the edges of the paper that will sometimes
show once the building is completed.
