We have been playing dirtside lately and I have been having problems figuring
out how to use infantry. I'm thinking about reworking my current infantry as
follows:

4 GEV MICVs
4 Elements GMS/L
2 Elements APSW
2 Elements Rifles w/Artillery spotter abilities.

I think my opponents will sit up and take notice.

My main opponent likes to us PA. I'm thinking some HEF artillery on his PA,
which he likes to bunch, should cause him at least minor problems.

One other question. I keep hearing people say that armour that armour in among
infantry is in trouble. In Dirtside I just don't see this. Am I seeing
incorrectly?

Interesting. I have a few units with a single spotter included, it does keep
an opponent on edge. It also tends to draw fire down on the unit, though, so
keep that in mind. With most of my units I have gone with making the PA
organic to the infantry platoons, similar to some SG structures:

2 Elements GMS/L
3 line 1 APSW 2 PA

This puts some spine in them for close assaults without removing their rifle
team nature.

Bunching is always bad.

I have not run the odds of this, but I think it depends a lot on
concentration of fire, the scenario, and unit confidence/quality.

We have had mixed results. APSW on the armor can really ruin an infantry
unit's day. We have had several ravaged when they stood against the armor.
Then again, we had an infamous stand by militia against an armored unit that
took out 3 of 4 in a close assault from a town edge (course most of the
infantry bought it too, but it stopped the advance). We have also had armor
break off due to IAVRs closing on multiple sides.

I was planning on 4 elements of PA in my VTOL transports. Probably
1 GMS/L and the rest close assault.

In theory I am happy with this. In practice I would like to see someone who
knew how to handle infantry at work.

Interesting - more of a Mechanized Heavy Weapons Platoon that a regular
Rifle/Infantry Platoon, I think.

RL military practice - and one of the real mil types on the list please
correct me if I'm wrong - is to have one of these Hvy Wpn units
supporting two or three regular 'Rifle' Platoons.

My DS PA units - I have a full company painted, and enough figures for a
full Assault Battalion w/ supports - have integral Light RAM mortars &
seperate Observers, which significantly helps firepower. Of course it's an
Orbital Assault PA formation, so they're usually also going to have
ortillery & trans-atmospheric fighter support. The Observer units help
there too!

Anyone bunching his forces up deserves a good dose of artillery...

Generally, tanks are in trouble. My PA enjoy getting in amongst tanks; regular
infantry can have a harder time. One of my opponents has a big
APC/IFV with 4 APSWs; that gives anyone a hard time.

The big advantage infantry have is that they can get rear & side armour shots,
where the armour is weaker.
