I can't get any of the various DS vehicle generators to run properly for me
(maybe something to do with WinXP?), so I was trying to make an
Excel-based version. Oy! There's so many conditional cases to deal
with! I could do it in Access no problem, but not many people have Access on
their home machines, and I thought it'd be nice to make something people could
download and use at home.
Anyone built anything like this in Excel?
It's been a LONG time since I diddled with M$ Access, but you used to be
able to create and distribute run-time apps that didn't require Access
itself on the machine. The user just couldn't make any changes. Or, am I
hallucinating?

Not everyone has excel either...at least on their home machine.
You may want to look into some of the freebie little development tools
out there. A product named wxBasic comes to mind. It's a basic-like
scripting language using wxWindows for GUI stuff. There is a version that runs
under Linux and Win32.

There's also the option of Perl, which is freeware for Windows, MacOSX and
Linux... or Java, as the FTJava team have demonstrated.

I built one for Filemaker a few years ago.
Do you have a copy of the Filemaker version handy? I have ship generator using
Filemaker and its great.

I ended up going with Access as I got frustrated with Excel. With some of the
improvements to Excel's list features it should be relatively easy to do it in
Excel now.
