G'day guys,
While pondering the issue of the bugs I suddenly wondered what kind of
'terrain' people have played on. Most games I've seen are grass, hills,
forest, swamp, urban etc. Has anyone actually ever played on
snow/ocean/desert?
Just curious.

WHile I personally wasn't involved in the game, a recent DS2 game held at a
local games store was played across water. They had land on both sides, 2
floating bridges, and the entire center section laid out as a channel.
Needless to say, most of the vehicles were hovertanks <g>.
I've played on a desert/beach table top and it was really cool. We got
the board from the war memorial from one of their old displays. The board is
fully textured, which made life hell in trying to spot tanks and the link. We
also did a beach landing on this table top. The defender had inplace bunkers
and defensive units. Good fun. Beats yomping around the village.

I've had two games that had forces assaulting over a beach from open water. I
have to saw that GRAV is really required to do one of these if there is any
significant opposition on said beach. The Defenders were dug in med tanks and
mech infantry with a mine belt.
A followup game had a two pronged attack down a ways from that beach on
another onto a spaceport. One land force assaulted along a road axis. Another
assulted over the beach again and had aircav and Aerospace support. The
defenders had bunkers, Pillboxes and a few big emplaced guns. Plus Airfield
security, a hvy tank platoon and a few detachments of mech infantry.
Sometime soon I will do a riverine comabat game with PBRs hover craft, grav
and LCMs.
Hi Beth!
At the 1999 GZG-ECC, I ran a game (Moonbase Xi) that was set on Luna,
Earth's moon. I had a lot of house rules (vacuum, low gravity, short distance
to the horizon, low escape velocity, etc.) You can view the scenario at
http://members.xoom.com/_XMCM/rlyehable/ds2/moonbasexi.html and pictures
at
http://people.canoe.ca/jhan/ft/gzgecc/gzgecc2/frames/gallery_fri_frame.h
tmlp
ictures (GZG-ECC web site).
At the same convention, I played in a game that did an amphibious landing
(Assault on Carter Island (DSII)). The pictures are at

tml
(also the GZG-ECC web site).

I didn't personally play in it, but our own John Atkinson came to
the GZG-ECC II earlier this year and ran a mega-scenario beach
assault. It went many hours. ;-) You can find pics of it, I believe,
on the GZG-ECC page, under 'after action reports and images' for
the GZG-ECC II con:

Hi Beth,
Your post is prefixed with DS so this may not be relevant. In SG we've played
snow and desert. Actually Nic Robson had some excellent terrain tiles for
beaches that were excellent.
Rob Deakin had some terrain tiles for an alien desert; rough and rocky. Just
played with lots of low 'hills' being snow drifts/ice mounds or sand
dunes. Terrain can be mostly diffucult for wheeled or tracked and Open for
Hover.

It wasn't DS, but a Modern Micro Armour comp I ran at a con many years ago
featured all different types of terrain, including snow and desert. I created
special rules for particular instances. The desert even had an oil
pipeline with pump house (being an objective) - and they weren't allowed
to damage the pipeline too much!
It's fun to try different terrains..

While I didn't play in the Moonbase XI scenario, I was sitting at a nearby
table during the game and watched the scenario develop. It looked like a great
scenario to play. I have to admit, though, the pictures on the GZG-ECC
site don't do it justice. It really looked a lot better than those pics would
indicate. It might just be the lighting, as I remember a great deal more
contrast between the terrain and the vehicles. At any rate, it was a great
looking scenario, and from the next table over, it looked like the
participants were having a great time. I also played in the Assault on Carter
Island scenario. It was a fun
scenario to set-up. As one of the defenders, it was really a challenge
to attempt to create a channel on the beach for the attacking troops. It was
also a pleasure to knock out the suspension of the armored units over the
water. The only problem with this scenario was that it just took too long. I
had to leave "early," i.e. about an hour after the game was supposed to end.
At that point, the attackers were just coming through the surf.

Just a thought:
If on an ocean using grav or even gev, would waves have an effect on the
stability of the vehicles? 20 ft ocean waves would be hell on the crew and
weapon systems.....
I remember designing some GEV craft and adding the Amphibious option to them.
Someone asked me why I did this (thought that it was a waste). I explained
that it allowd them to survive if they recieved an immobile chit. Also, it
allows them to sit on the water (such as in swamp, reeds, etc.) and wait in
ambush.
G'day guys,
Thanks for the inspirational responses guys, sounds like there's been some
VERY cool DS/SG played out there! I'm going to have to go and add
beaches and ocean to the list of terrain Derek WILL make for us!!
Thanks
Beth

Speaking of riverine craft--
I am in the process of preparing a scenario (to be run on the 20th at the
local game shop) that gives one side some riverine forces (as well as other
stuff) to try and stop an attack force consisting of a high proprtion of grav
vehicles. I am even scratch building a small LCM-Monitor type vessel
(just putting the finishing touches on it now).
In this scenario, just about everything is either grav or hover or boat
(except for the PBI of course).

A long time ago, in a shop far, far away.... Sorry. Anyway, we once did a 15mm
SF game that was partially set in an arctic landscape. The terrain was
amazing: white felt, white sculpted styrofoam hills, and some frozen lakes
that were made of transparent plastic that had been painted from below. It
looked great, other than the little guys with their bright green grass
bases....

I've heard of Micro Armour, but what is is like (rule wise)?
