Subject: [DS] "Army" packs?

This is more a question for Jon but anyone can comment if they'd like.

I'm wondering if any thought has gone into producing "army" packs for
Dirtside? Well...maybe not armies but lets say company packs.

You could order a company of Mech. Inf and it comes with 9 APCs, 18 infantry
stands, 4 command APCs and 4 short stands to represent the platoon leaders and
company commander.

Each company would be tailored to the nation it is associated with.

Well... it's an interesting thought, maybe it's something we can look
at doing when we have DS3 ready to go!! ;-)

We have, in the past, done DS "starter forces" which had, say, a couple of
tank platoons, a mech inf platoon (with a pack of infantry) and a platoon of
support stuff (GMS, arty or whatever).

Well hop to it... Umm.. Please?

Pretty please?

I second his request/suggestion for DS "starter forces". I think
they're a great idea.

Bridage Models does sell some company packs, but without infantry stands. I
think it's a great idea, personally; company packs could form the basis with
specialized units (air defense, combat engineers, etc.) available in smaller
lots (sections, platoons, or individually).

Ok, if you'll forgive this ole vacc'head, there are a few different issues
going on.

1) People want volume discounts, which Jon appears to love to give, no
problem.

2) People want rational groups of sets, but this requires a little better
definition of how these units should be set up. This will require some
dicussion, and probably arguments, but of a mostly functional variety. Can get
nasty, but seems possible.

3) People want 'national' army set ups. However, I've seen few discussions of
how these probably go, and tend toward vague outlines, though I know some
people have a few T.O.E.'s. I'm not sure how locked down folks, especially
Jon, want this, though Fleet Books did that pretty much for
ships. A browse through the 1/300 part of the site, well stocked with
piccies, I might add, shows that few of the items are defined to one or
another 'nation' anyway.

So, with direction from Jon as to the size of packs he'd like to assemble, you
might want to focus on 2) as small generic units, to build to 3) armies.

YMMV, big time.

Valid points. While a Kra'Vak Mech. Infantry Company would be nice I guess we
can't expect it until the Kra'Vak have a healty choice of combat vehicles
right?

Reality (as far as TOE) can really throw a kink into the works but when I do
my infrequent DS game I normally arrange my groups in 3 or 4 element chunks
and two stands per APC unless I'm doing powerarmor in which case it's one
stand per APC.

That's just me and YMMV.

I brought the topic up because I read on TMP that Italeri is coming out with
some WW2 skirmish set with figures, tanks, rules, etc. I think it's a trend
that GZG shouldn't ignore to be honest with you all. I'd like to see Jon have
a small boxed set which includes enough rules and metal to play the game out
of the box.

A little cover artwork, four baggies of figs, a scaled down DS2(3?), and a
load of headaches I'm sure.:)

Methinks Jon should hire someone to sling his lead so he can sit in his
overlord chair and work on his plans of world domination...urm...I mean
backlog of rules.;)

Actually, Games Workshop has been doing boxed sets of minis for years. And
it's a good idea. The number one concern of a store stocking a miniatures line
is "can people walk in, give us money and start playing?" Number one, besides
normal business considerations of course. But if a

customer walks in wanting to start playing a particular game and she
can't walk out with enough lead to start playing with - then you lose
one sale now and more down the line. I used to reorder miniatures twice a week
at Games of Berkeley just so that situation wouldn't happen.

Boxed sets would be a great way to get GZG back on store shelves in the
States, and the Commonwealth crowd might go for them too.

Yup. I bought one off you at either Dragonmeet or Salute. In honesty, I can't
remember which one. Now if only I could get the time to paint
them :-(

Simplest is probably a "tech level" pack. Wheeled, tracked, hover or grav.

Well, since I don't have many "Canon" nations, I find the 'Mix and Match' of
Brigade for size 1 through 4 and GZG for size 3 through 5 works for me best. I
Try to look for weapons that "look" like they represent
HEL/DFFG/HKP-MDC/HVC-RFAC/SLAM weapons as most the 'nations' I write
scenarios for have an established preference for weapons technology. I have
IC, NAC and "Evil" UNSC (Hegemony anyone? grin) as the only "Canon"
groups I plan on getting forces for in the rules [IC/UNSC for SG 2, IC
and maybe (unlikely but maybe) UNSC for FT, with none slotted for DS 2
appearances currently. I do use mostly NAC for NPC FT forces though...
IC are a lot of 'other' [as in non-GZG/Brigade] ships.

I would not spend a lot of money on "DS 3 Army Packs" - but then I have
hundreds of figures for DS 2 in the paint queue already...

Gracias, Glenn

Well, if we get to be his obligatory Line of Taciturn Minions, it'll make
looking over his shoulder easier....
