Well, finally got around to re-joining the list since it moved
(how many years has it been?).
Anyway, while designing some ships, I've noticed a 'bug' in the crew factor
rules (for Fleet Book). Either that or my arithmetic is wrong (wouldn't be a
first, but I've triple checked). Either way, I'd appreciate people taking a
look at the following...
Take a ship with mass 180, and 48 hull points.
The number of crew factors is 9 (mass/20). 9's into 48 go five
and a bit times, rounded up, so every 6th hull box has a crew factor marker.
Except, 6 goes into 48 exactly 8 times. The 8th crew factor goes into the last
hull box, leaving nowhere for the 9th CF.
Have I miscalculated, or are there certain combinations of designs where the
algorithm doesn't work? I've just put the last CF into the penultimate hull
box for now.
Anyway,see http://www.bifrost.demon.co.uk/games/ft/b5/ea.html
for the design itself - it's the Avenger Heavy Carrier, which
is the second ship down.
Cheers.

The obvious is that you should round down, instead of up in this case.

Doesn't work[1]. That leaves the 9th half way along the last row, meaning all
the crew is dead before the ship is destroyed. Though realistic, I'm assuming
that this isn't a result that you're supposed to get.
[1] Okay, it works, but it's not an ideal solution in my mind.
You have done the correct thing. Placed the last crew factor in
the next-to-last hull box (i.e. the last two hull boxes are marked
with crew factors).

Nope, you did the right thing. You follow the algorithm, but sometimes the
last crew factor has no place to go, so you put it in the second last box.
This isn't written in the book, but it's the accepted practice. This should
probably be put in a FAQ somewhere...

Okay, thanks to everyone who replied. The fact that it wasn't in the FAQ sort
of made me think I'd overlooked something.
Nice to know my arithmatic isn't *that* bad... :-)

It's not *written* in the book, but have a look at the SSDs of the
Phalon BC and bigger in FB2 :-/

I thought of that... but I looked in FB1! NONE of the designs in FB1 have it.
They all end on the last line.
