Hi,
This is sort of a survey to find out a few things from those of you out there
that play Dirtside II.
I have offered to try and write a computer program to play the part of the
referee in the game. But before I get to far into it I have a few questions.
1. How many of you out there play Dirtside II? 2. What exactly would you want
from a program like this? 3. Do any of you use customized weaponry on your
vehicles? 4. If so what are the stats for these weapons? 5. Would you want to
be able to customize certain aspects of the rules
?
6. If so what aspects would you alter? 7. What exactly is an Infantry Walker
and how many points does it cost?
8. RSW air cushion vehicles have the same size/power limits as GEV's
is this slow or fast GEV's? 9. How many of you use modularised vehicles? 10.
How many use oversized vehicles?
My apologies if this is of no interest to you.
My thanks to any and all that reply.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "referee". Can you explain that a bit?
Incidentally, I've been trying to write a program that generates vehicle
stats, only I haven't really had any time. Has anyone else tried
something like this? The program that I have in mind is a GUI-based,
user-friendly, Win95 program that stores weapons and vehicle stats in a
database.
> Incidentally, I've been trying to write a program that generates
Actually I wrote a visual basic app that takes care of the stat gens. There
are still a few bugs in it, but eventually I'll get them all worked out.
So
far it handles conventional vehicles and infantry.
I currently record the stats and open a template in corel where I plug the
values into a card, similar to the one in the back of the rules.

That's interesting. Would you mind posting the program?

Um, not to be a spoilsport or anything, but it's probably a bad idea to send
encoded binary files to this mailing list. We're using a small, overloaded
mailserver at the university in Bolton, and if we start
re-sending 200+ copies of a 1MB+ file through this mailing list we might
find ourselves un-invited.
Whoa, the program is that big?

I like laying "straight". 6. If so what aspects would you alter? 7. What

Nope.

Hey! I haven't gotten around to answering this yet. Hope it's not too
late for the survey. :-)

Meee!
> 2. What exactly would you want from a program like this ?
I'm not sure. I haven't gotten that deep into the game yet to start wondering
about computer play-aids. Hmmmm....dunno. Maybe an algorithm tool that
would replace the chits? Not as messy as when one is spilling chits all over
the
floor. ;-)
> 3. Do any of you use customized weaponry on your vehicles ?
No, so far, just the 'generic' weapons given in DS2.
> 5. Would you want to be able to customize certain aspects of the rules
I sorta kinda do. I use (and I've heard other people on the list do the same)
a 'medium speed' for some vehicles, which basically sits between the fast and
slow speed vehicles. I also have tweaked the Walker rules a little (my
understanding is that Walkers come in either size class 1
or size class 5+; I make other size classes, too :)
> 6. If so what aspects would you alter ?
See above.
> 7. What exactly is an Infantry Walker and how many points does it
My take on it is a Walker that carries infantry?
> 8. RSW air cushion vehicles have the same size/power limits as GEV's
Dunno; not an expert at this game (yet;)
> 9. How many of you use modularised vehicles ?
I haven't - yet! Will soon.

I haven't - yet. ;-) WIll soon...

I have done a Windows program that allows you to do vehicle design, force
design, and has a couple of "referee" functions thrown in -- draws
chits, rolls dice, displays tables, etc.
Have another that does the same thing for Full Thrust.
Let's talk/exchange ideas.

That's interesting. I've been trying to do the same. What programming language
did you use?

I have two versions: the first is in Visual Basic and is just a replication of
the standard rules. The newest version is in Delphi and, being
object-oriented, allows the user to add systems, change costs, etc. I
will try to upload a zipped copy for folks to download.

That's excellent. I have both VB and Delphi, maybe we can exchange some ideas.
> That's interesting. I've been trying to do the same. What programming
While I personally don't have this problem, I would caution you to:
1) refrain from sending to the list any binary or encoded files. They tend to
be rather large (for one), and the host machine doesn't take too kindly to
overly large msgs going through it (ie, we could lose this site for hosting
the mailing list),
2) there are some folks out there whose mailers *can't* handle large
messages/files of that size, and will choke and die (do you *really*
want to kill off your fellow list-friends? :), and
3) you guys might also want to think about
A) signing your notes so you know who each of you are (and us, too;) and
B) exchanging email addresses instead
With regards to 3B I'm only thinking about list members who don't want to read
this (me, personally, I don't mind; I'm glad to know that there's someone(s)
out there actually working on stuff like this:), and this is especially if
they have to pay for their msgs (<sigh> and yeah, here I am throwing stones at
glass houses, being guilty of the occassional abberrant msg myself; anyone
wnat to shoot me, go right 'head).
Anyway, just some thoughts you guys might want to keep in mind. Especially the
size thing and sending those types of files. You might want to offer it up
instead on an individual basis, have people email you directly for a copy if
you want to distribute it. That way if only 20 or so people want
to have it, the other 180(+?) people won't get it, too.
Mk
I don't plan on uploading the VB version; for that I have to send an
installation disk (just the way the language sorts its files, I guess). The
Delphi version I can zip and put out on a server somewhere so anyone who wants
it can download.
Any other "trade secrets" or code anyone wants to exchange, please feel free
to email me directly.

No need for that. Just zip 'em all. You CAN place all required DLLs, VBXs,
OCXs etc. in the program directory. It works just fine.
Just a word from someone who earns his paycheck doing VB.
To the gentleman who has the Dirtside II program, I would be interested in
getting the windows operating version, assuming it does not require win 95.

HELP...I sent someone else my DSII VB program and I think not all of it got
there. What should I send exactly?

Your manual should detail that (look under "Distributing your application"),
but here's a simple approach:
1) The program executable (File|Make exe)
2) vbrunX00.dll, where X is your VB version number. A higher number will
also work. You should find that in your windows/system directory. Many
users already have it. 3) Any custom controls and DLLs you're using. Open your
project file (.mak) in Notepad and see for references to DLL, VBX or OCX
files. 4) If you're using other DLLs via API, those must go too. Since you
wrote the function declarations, you should know what and where they are. 5)
Any separate files your program explicitly loads. As above.
Unless you're using the database functionalities, that should do it. If you
are, you need to consult the manual.
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Dirtside II rules? I was
thinking of trying them out for WWII and didn't realize that they are out of
print.
I tried my usual online sources (as well as eBay) and came up blank.
Thanks
Maybe Jon T knows who might have some?

GZG would be one option, http://www.gtns.net/gzgstore/
Scanning is complete and I am editing it now, basically going through the Word
file and tightening it up, the text itself is mostly fine but there are a few
quirks from the scanning.
It is down to about 800k.

Think that the work thats been done is great! Thanks
And, yes, I like a copy myself
