I am looking for a set of rules to get total novices (junior and senior HS
kids) involved in SF miniatures gaming. It would be great if they started off
with VERY simple rules, and offered a bunch of options to gradually increase
realism (and complexity).
My goal, of course, is to build up a group of people worth stomping in an open
fight (FT, DS or SG, doesn't matter. Or all three.)
Does anyone have any suggestions?
G'day,

Basic move and shot DS, FT and SG (bring in the fancier stuff as they get more
confident). Its how we've introduced our kids to gaming. Lachy's been playing
GZG stuff since he was 4 (now 7) and Janneke has picked it up a bit this year
(now that she's 4). I figure if they can cope, anyone can;)
Cheers
Well, that would certainly be the most efficient... get them started on the
right book from the start.
OK, if your 4-year old could get involved with miniatures
and susvive without either eating them or being swatted, I guess these kids
should be able to handle it...
Thanks.

OGRE.
Start out with the "Ogre Deluxe" boxed set. Maybe buy some more minis,
maybe do as I did and hex-up a table-tennis table with 13cm diameter
hexes (ie each side 6.5cm). Then you can go to "Ogre Miniatures". From there,
maybe DSII.
For a flyer, see page 3 of http://www.cgs.asn.au/2002-Entry-Booklet.pdf
(WARNING! 20 page pdf!) available at

Lumme download it and have a look... thanks.
Hey, only 2 megs? That's not bad at all...

Ogre for microarmor,

Just to be clear, do you mean Ogre or Ogre Miniatures?
How about "The Outer Rim"? You can find it on the Science Fiction section
of http://www.freewargamesrules.co.uk/
Of course all the GZG games are actually very simple if you leave out all the
special weapons and so on. Beth and Derek's 7 year old can play a GZG game and
I first introduced my son to DSII when he was only a bit older

and he beat me!!

The Big Three, as far as I am concerned, are:
Full Thrust for starships, Ogre for microarmor,
and ShockForce for 25mm/28 skirmish.
All are quick, all are simple, and all are a lot of fun. Also, all of them use
d6s and d6s only...I think that this is just a conincidence, though.

Yes, I did. Mean Ogre miniatures, that is.
It's not the ideal game, in that it's not as versatile as something like DSII,
but it plays so quickly and so easily that I think that OM is a much better
game for begninning players.
Especially if you give the new guy the Ogre.
Never got my US$.02
Majestic twelve has a system which is not as rich as FT but is really
easy to play called starmada <mj12games.com/starmada>
easy, and cheap! ($10 on sale right now)
