Subject: D8 Galactic Derelict rules from ECC XV

Hi All,

I had promised to make the D8 Galactic Derelict rules from a game that I ran
at ECC XV available to some folks who were there. Sadly, since more than 3
days have passed since that event, I have completely lost the list of email
addresses that I took down so that I could let folks know when they were
edited to a point where I was comfortable with sharing them.

The editing is done.:)

For those who were not there, D8 Galactic Derelict pits valiant genetically
enhanced marine troops in powered assault armor with a devastating array of
weaponry against veritable horde of relentless, remorseless alien monsters in
the tight, winding corridors of an alien space derelict craft or space
station.

This game as NOTHING to do with Games Workshops wonderful and highly regarded
game "Space Hulk". NOTHING. It's not even vaguely similar and should never be
confused as such.

I know that Martin and Steve, and maybe Roger and Damo (sorry, memory is long
gone!) wanted copies. If you want a copy, please drop me an email and I'll
respond with a zip file for you.

You'll get - rules, unit sheets (pre-filled and blank), and counters.
If you need d8s or d8 stickers, let me know and we'll figure out something.

Thanks,

It's too big to email. Here is the link to the zip file:

Please do not share the link - I want to try to track who has the
files so that I can update folks if there are changes, and to get feedback.

Thanks!

harm really, as I would not refuse anyone on this access to the download.

You should all have the address, so go at it if you want a copy.

Thanks Roger!

John, you can drop me from your list for updates. Between a really long,
obnoxious registration for Google Docs, followed by massive decompression fail
on WinZip, I'm unable to get to the files.

Thanks for your effort!

Winzip failed to decompress?

Would you like for me to mail you the files individually? I think that
separately they should be small enough to send.

I also found that I included the wrong Fire Markers file, so I'm updating that
and will replace the file on the google docs site.

One other thing - the new zip file will be in a legacy format - I
recently upgraded winzip and that may have caused the problem.

I'd like to get these to you, so let me know.

Thanks,

*shrug* WinZip seemed to open, displayed a list of files, then choked while
trying to open one. Course, I downloaded to OPEN, rather than to SAVE followed
by trying to decompress. I just generally save decompressed files rather than
the original zip.

Still, the error messages I got suggested that there was a version issue.

Thanks again, John!

One thing: I also am weird in that I like to print booklet form. Have to
squint a bit, but I have to do that most times anyway. Upshot, either page
count divisible by four, or an extra 'this page intentionally left blank'
helps.

Lastly, in keeping with the 'not Space Hulk' theme, I believe I'll be battling
with Heroscape beasties. 'Those Marro aren't carrying weapons.
Those are bio-tools for repairing the hulk..'

D'oh, I said 'hulk'.

Don't suppose you're working on psyker rules... *duck*

Hi Doug,

I didn't really envision this one as a document that would need to be 4 paged
for printing purposes, as I only created it for my own games and for the ECC.
Never the less, doing a real layout with nice borders and such might not be a
bad idea. I'll see if I can get that done in the next few weeks. It'll be good
too in that I might put it on my business web site as a free download some
day.

I play 'scape with my son semi-often. He loves the marro. In fact,
last week he told me to work up points for my dwarves (I've been using the
Mantic plastic dwarves as I like the minis) for a "rescue some hostages from
the orcs" game. I did. My merry band entered the Orc encampment, killed some
guards, advanced in further and noticed odd activity in some swampy spaces.
Yeah, he put a Marro hive in the swamp and my dwarves had to fight to the
death with Marro! In the end, two dwaf heroes survived, both wounded.:)

I also converted a spare Marro warrior into a sniper, and a drone into a blind
standard bearer with an eye on the top of the standard pole. I'll take pics of
those soon and will get them onto a web page.

And if you want, I'd be happy to send you the Marro file for not-space
hulk that I wrote up. I think the only units missing are the giant with the
marro riding on it, the hero on the marro steed, the cavalry unit, and the
giant snake. I need to reformat the data to match the card style, but will be
happy to do so if you want them.:)

very odd indeed. I just got a google docs request to give your account access,
but it was all in Japanese characters. I approved it, but have no idea of why
it was in Japanese. Give the download a shot again. The zip file looks normal
from my account.

I'm gonna guess that the Japanese thing is on your side.:)

Not to worry, I just was suggesting PDF's in general could use a blank page
for a bit of padding if necessary.

It looks fine, as is, really.

7-zip is a very strong open source replacement for winzip.

I appreciate an ink conscious layout -- the squad sheets' reference
tables are perfect (the borders make for strong groupings); the grey
background on the squad has the downside of printing as a muddy mix of all
color inks on my old inkjet.

the rulebook's perfect for me -- no unnecessary decorations, much less
the full page color gradient backgrounds found in such unprintables as FFG's
rogue trader sheet pdfs.

Xander,

Good point. I liked the gray, but I would be happy to make plain
black/white versions of the unit sheets as well.

They would not take long at all. Maybe I'll do that next week and will put up
a small zip as "low ink unit sheets".:)

I did consider some very light weight psycher rules, but would need to
take a MUCH closer read of the [----------] psycher rules to see what
the flavor should be and how to do it with my very simplistic mechanics. I've
never really liked the overly powerful psychers in such games. My first pass
was to give librarians simply settable abilities. at the beginning of the turn
they could set their psychic force to things like "protection" "impact"
"speed", etc. and gain a small bonus for the turn.

I'll think about the psycher ssue.:)

You know? The 'psyker' comment was pure teasing; one must be careful

Sorry, I answered a note while missing some points to acknowledge...

Makes me sad I'm so far away from my grandson; let the son-in-law
support him in baseball and football(American), let my daughter allow his vid
game addiction. I'd really love to see him pushing figs around. He's really
quite bright. Your son certains sounds like a lad I could
admire while heaping insults at his devious nature. ;->=

Love to see 'em! Not sure any of the mentioned ones as non-supported
make sense in a narrow ship, though I just recently picked up the 'steed'. At
some point, I'd like to make a unit of them as they match, somewhat, some of
the original box set, and virtually separate rider by
throwing a bit of table-colored cloth over it.

Of course, not TOO big a unit; the whole point of playing with Heroscape is
cheap, mediocrely painted figs, and those riders aren't so cheap.

Hey Doug,

No worries about leaving out some parts. I do it all the time. You
don't always really have time/mental energy to respond to everything.
:) Just in case you want to try to adapt parts of D8GD to a broader scope,
I'll try to get a sheet done with the larger marro. I did write up the Marrden
Hounds and Marrden Grubs. I love the Marrded Grub minis.:)

Bummer about your grandson being far away. I had to fight hard for years to
get custody of my son. I still can't get custody of my
daughter - she has Cerebral Palsy (she goes to school with other kids
her age, but has mobility issues) and no judge in the US is going to
pull her from mom no matter how screwed up (IMHO) mom is. But I have
my son, and that's a huge win. And he has a ton of heroscape stuff. That's
cool for me as well as it's not a bad little game if you make a few tweaks. We
don't use their sighting and targeting rules 'cause they're way too "toy
soldier" for us. I've read about tricks where you can use some units with long
weapons and place them such that other units cannot get into an adjacent hex,
and thus they cannot be attacked in melee. Sorry, but that kind of cheese is
stinky.

We've used some custom units as well. I got him a Mecha-Godzilla and
wrote up a card for it. It's nasty, but a lot of fun.

Oh, I also bought up some Marro for myself. A bunch of diviiders,
some drones and a few ne-bok-sa (or whatever his name is from the
first master set - the one with the big armored arm spike) and made
them into a Bloodbowl Khemri team. I little bit of conversion, repaints in
marro colors, rebase and done. I really like how they turned out. Sadly, no
one left around here to play BB with, so I haven't been able to use them yet.
Oh well.

Oh, and I did take a quick look at some of the psycher rules. I can
emulated a lot of them for D8GD - in fact, some of the marro powers
are already written in to be pretty close to psycher versions of similar
things. Just not sure how much of it I think will add to the game. I'll think
about it a bit more for an expansion.:)

Later,

J
