I've begun reading a good space opera with a FT style (actually shades of
StarFire). It's "In Death Ground" by David Weber and Steve White. I think any
FT fan would like it. Does anyone know if the other two, earlier, books in the
series are similar?

The book has a couple things that would be interesting additions to FT. One of
the races has "datalink" technology that allows a number of ships in a certain
range of each other to "merge" their shields and fire control. Thus their
defense is increased and their missile attacks arrive in a single volley. This
could be an interesting addition to FT on a number of levels (shields, ECM,
fire control, massing missiles, etc).

Read it too. Great book with well written battle scenes. Could be some
interesting scenario ideas in there. Weber and White really know how to keep
the tension and energy level pumped during the battles. I recommend
reading it with the soundtrack to the film _Crimson Tide_ in the
background.
I went and got the prequel, _Crusade_, right after I read _In Death
Ground_,
it follows a lot of the older characters from _In Death Ground_ as they
fight in a previous campaign. I can hardly wait for the sequel (conclusion)
to _In Death Ground_ to be published.

Just finished last night, myself.

'Shades'?? Hee. No, it *is* Starfire.

Yes, verily. 'Crusade' is essentially a prequal and 'Insurrection' follows 'In
Death Ground' at a later time (but don't remember how far down the timeline it
goes). 'Crusade' covers the Theban War that is occassionally mentioned in 'In
Death Ground'. I like the books, but my only 'complaint' is that ofttimes
Weber doesn't finish his battles. He sets 'em up nicely, develops them nicely,
gives a nice tension to the flow of the battle, gives good detail as to how
things are coming and going, and then...next chapter. Sometime later. The
battle is long over and characters 'look back' on them.

To be fair he doesn't do this all the time, but often enough to make it
annoying for me. :-/ Other than that, yes, I recommend the other two
books, also. I liked them.

Do you want the old edition (i.e. the better one) The 2nd edition
w/Gorm Khanate war (the best edition) or the new (i.e. really crappy
edition) I have all three and would be more than willing to vector
them to you ;-)

Funnily enough, I've just been reading Crusade and Insurrection in the last
few weeks, having had them on the bookshelf for years - they've finally
got to the top of the "must get round to reading" list!

I think I've mentioned before that I have never played Starfire, and haven't
actually even got a copy. Possibly a good thing, because from reading the
books I realise some of the concepts are so much like FT that if I'd been
familiar with Starfire first then FT might never have come out
like it did - I'd have been too worried about accusations of
plagiarism...
:)
Now that FT is well enough established that this isn't a problem, however,

Be happy to check for ya, Jon. I'll stop off at the Armory later this
afternoon and see if they have anything left. They did a few weeks ago when I
was in their warehouse.

I hope you liked Crusade. I just finished that one a couple of weeks ago.
I can't find my copy of _Insurection_, though. Get _In Death Ground_ as
soon as it comes out in the UK.

Jon, you can order a PDF copy of _Sky Marshal #2_, the latest
incarnation of
_Starfire_ over the internet. Check this web page from Task Force

Word of warning: SM#2 is _not_ the latest incarnation of Starfire. It is
more or less a replacement (more rather than less) for _Imperial
Starfire_
(the latest printed version of the campaign rules - the part that makes
3rd edition the crap one:(). There are some changes to the hull capabilities
and some smoother mechanics for large battles, but SM#2
is far less stand-alone than More Thrust :/

We are working on an updated Starfire edition, with all changes from Sky

Marshals #1 and 2, but I don't know when it'll be available:(
