Congratulations to Germany on their Round of 8 victory over the USA in the
World Cup.
Congratulations to the USA for an excellent run. I only saw the last part of
the game, but it appeared that Germany played intelligently and treated team
USA with respect, something other teams did not (to their folly).
As a Scot who grew up in Canada, and as a soccer fan, I feel that team USA's
performance can only be good for soccer in North America (at least that part
of N.A. north of Mexico...).
Of course, now that the US is out (since I live in the US), I have no one to
root for. As a Scot I just _can't_ cheer on England! I refuse to cheer
for Brazil (I'm still peeved at the awful, boring final game a couple of World
Cup's ago with Brazil against Italy; which is why I wasn't cheering on Italy,
either, though I'm 1/8 Italian). Looks like I'm cheering on Germany, as
their the closest to my Celtic roots!

Perhaps a bit too cautiously, the Americans had some excellent chances.
But we had an excellent goalkeeper :-)

They have played pretty nicely this time around.

There are other criteria
How about cheering for, say, the plucky underdog - Senegal, or a team
with surprising endurance - South Korea, or...
Greetings

That's the feeling I got. My Dad (an avid soccer fan who had uncles that
played professionally in Scotland, one for the national team) always got
frustrated with defensive, "hold the lead" games. One mistake and suddenly
you're tied and the momentum has shifted.

I see I have to check the Soccer web sites! *L* It's frustrating being a
soccer fan in the Deep South.

They are good to watch if they get a team that _wants_ to win, like
against France last World Cup. The problem against Italy is that neither team
wanted to win so much as both teams were scared to lose.

That's very true! I have a soft spot for Senegal, but when I cheer for the
Underdog (so far Ireland and the US) I always end up disappointed!
