Vehicle (man fired) MGs: I use 12" Range Bands. Why? HMGs have put effective
fire out to well over 1000m. Limiting to QD just limits regulars RB to 320m.
That's
silly - the HMG then only has the same range as the rifles. Now, you
could do that, but you'd have to include a modifier (double?) to make it
sensible.
Card Initiative:
Good comments from Scott S. Yes, I can see card initiative being a problem in
some groups. Usually when we play SG2, some folks are
jawing, some eating, others playing on the PC at some first-person
shooter, so the timing issue isn't a big one. But, just to point out, I've
seen alternating activation games drag at cons too.... everyone can't be
involved if some complex resolutions (ie Close Assault with defensive fire)
are going on anyway. But cards might increment the uninvolvement problem.
One other card option for those interested: Indeterminate turn length. Put in
one (or more) cards that are end of turn. When one comes up, the deck is
reshuffled. Unactivated units and unspent commander activations are lost. This
makes for a very tense (if sometimes a bit odd) game.

All right thus far, but how about if the weapon is bascially the same as the
one the gropos walk around with? In this case it's an AGL, same stats as
normal. Ought we to assume the vehicle mounted version has a better mount,
more propellant etc, so longer range, or should it be about the same
as for a normal shoulder-fired AGL?

I would say 12" range bands for the steady mount and the increased ammo
supply. I would think less time for changing clips or bands or powerpacks or
whatever would allow the vehicle-mounted AGL to put out the more
consistent stream of fire that would be needed for effective fire at extreme

I ruled, for a PBEM game I'm running with Chris (Laserlight) and Roger West,
that the AGL had 12" range bands. I took into account the steadier platform
and the fact that the weapon is elevated. In general, weapons on vehicles will
fire from a higher position than the weapons operated manually. I felt this,
and the stabilization, justified them having 12" range bands, which is really
the same as elite troops anyway.
Also there are game reasons. This means that all weapons on vehicles have 12"
range bands, simplifying the game. (Oh, my... got to take this into account
with my upcoming-real-soon-now enhanced vehicle rules, which uses
quality-based range bands).
