I just got the latest catalog from American Science and Surplus:

http://www.sciplus.com/ (for the web-inclined)

Among the usual exciting new silly things they were selling all the plastic
"miniatures" from the Buck Rogers game in individual bags (bags
of 15-100 sorted by type).

So... aside from alerting the world at large, I wanted to know if anybody
could pass judgement on these things, or even better, if anybody's got
pictures of them somewhere I could see...

Thanks

Tom

I'm assuming this is just so we can get the catalog, if so inclined. I'm not
seeing the ships on the site listings.

To save us the trouble of trying to get the catalog, prices would have been
nice in the description above.

Figs are of space ships and 'people'. All made from soft, slick plastic that
I've been referring to as vinyl, but, after I'd been taken to task, is
probably the even more difficult to paint polypropylene. Everything is
marginally crudely molded, simply detailed.

Ships: I forget exact names, somebody already put them up, and probably
will again, but: learjet-in-space, about 1/2 inch long; 'battler', looks
like the Sathar fighters from Star Frontiers, maybe 3/4 inch with
forward
swept wings; 'transports', shoe-boxes with bulb nose and wings, probably
closest to the old serials' spaceships, little longer than an inch.

Damn, the box art had the transports the long and lovely Knight Hawks
independents...

'People': Characters(Buck, Wilma, Ardala, Kane, Huer, Barney(Black)) in
gold plastic; troopers, actually fair modern-types; 'gennies' larger
than
troopers, goofy pistol-toters, look ok next to Paranoia's plastic bubble
heads.

Misc. Factory squares and orbital death satellites (detailed globe with bfg on
top) both in dark gray.

All of the above, except where mentioned, molded in six, really ugly
(tm)
pastel colors. ;->=

It will probably show up once they update (they do have mostly current
listings form my brief glances). But yes, I did intend to give the URL so
people could request a catalog if they wished (lots of other useful
modeling-type stuff in there).

I know, I know... I forgot to bring the catalog to work today, or I would
have. I'll have item numbers and a full description tomorrow. Sorry.

Thanks for the description of the parts. Probably not really worth it, but
hey, they're cheap!

Sorry right back at you, Tom, if it sounded like I was in a snit.

The listings on the web site have cute, if not entirely coherent, labels. Made
hunting and searching a 'term not politically correct and probably offensive
to the one regular female contributor, whom
I respect greatly.' ;->=

I should have cooled down a bit before replying.

FWIW, I've sent for the catalog; I was curious what sort of prices they'd ask.
I'm trying to talk a local storekeep into a Gencon booth, and one of the
things I thought about was lil packets of the ships from incomplete thrift
shop scores.

The catalog, unfortunatly, is similarly arranged. It's a bit easier to see
what you're looking for when they're all on the same page though.

I've found the prices to be generally very fair (though sometimes you need to
buy in greater quantity than you'd like). I've bought almost all of my
modelling tools (needle files, knives, plier, drill bits, etc.) from them and
have been very pleased. They even sold miniatures for a time, at $2.00 per
blister (completely random assortment though).

Happy hunting, I'll try and remember to bring that catalog with me tomorrow.

Polypropylene (or more likely, polyethylene) can be painted by using a coat
or two of primer (I use Krylon Sandable spray), then _gently_ painting
it and applying a sealer such as a clear gloss coat. If you use the "stab it
with a brush" or "wash and wipe" techniques you will likely take off paint and
quite possibly primer. It wouldn't be worth the trouble, except PE (or PP) is
cheap, which means you may well be able to pick up 50 ships for a couple of
dollars.

I finally remembered to bring the catalog to work. Here's the entry:

----------------------------------------------------------------
Buck Rogers!

We have pieces from a Buck Rogers game called, we are told, "Buck Rogers
Battle for the 25th Century." Except the Gun Pods, which are all dark grey,
the pieces are all assortments of: green, yellow, blue, purple, brown and
violet. The pieces: Gunpods, Fighter Planes, War Birds, Space Shuttles, Troops
and Generals. Mostly they are around 1" in the largest dimension, with the
Generals a little bigger and the fighters a little
smaller. Note: we show the quantity pre-packed in a bag in the
listing. You get one bag for the price shown.

27786 BR Gun Pods (10) $0.75/each
27785 BR Fighter Planes (96) $1.00/each
30332 BR War Birds (36) $1.00/each
30331 BR Space Shuttles (24) $1.00/each
27787 BR Troops (120) $2.00/each
27784 BR Generals (48) $1.25/each

I still have a copy of BR lurking around upstairs. I remember I got it for a
fiver about 8 years ago. Hasn't seen th light of day since then.. All I can
remember were the satellite pieces which were quite nice as I remember.

Must take a look at it again. A simple enough game but fun.
