It was pretty good, but it was so long ago, it's difficult to remember
specifics.

Our Sky Plus box managed to corrupt the last two episodes we
recorded, including the first part of the end-of-season two
parter. After watching the entire season, this is, to say the least, somewhat
annoying...
Are there any sites like the old B5 fan pages which have detailed episode
write ups?

That was back in October, I think... I'd say they keep up the feel as things
progress.

In the UK there's only one episode left to broadcast (on Sky).

Yes it is. All episodes have already shown in England according to English
posters.

My take is that the Galactica seems... weak. In the original series (iirc), a
single battelstar could take on 1 or 2 cylon base stars and hold it's own, or
win. In the new series, it seems they're either badly outnumbered, or badly
outclassed (my gut reaction was the latter), and they run and run and run some
more, and don't ever really seem to engage
or fight their way free.
There are plenty of things to like about the show, but I'm not convinced
that it will fulfill my desire to see some kick ass dogfights and watch some
cylon base stars get obliterated.

Well, it's an _old_ battlestar, and they're _new_ cylons.

Spoilers for the series (up to episode 12) follow.
Nope, basestars are definitely "oh sh*t run away" rather than "let's
take it out". There's actually very little dogfighting - and what there
is tends to be brief and fatal.

One thing to remember is that there is a time difference between the when the
first series occurred and when this series picks up. The Galactica is from the
vintage of earlier time frame when the first Cylon war occurred. Note all of
the archaic communication devices that they are forced to use. Remember that
the Galactica was in the process of going through its decommissioning ceremony
when the new series. The Cylons aren't the old tin cans that they were in the
first Cylon war. They have evolved and their technology has evolved and become
deadlier. It is no surprise that the Galactica would seem weak.
Now as far as storyline goes, we'll just have to wait and see how weak the
series is.

I found more to dislike, but they are seriously OT. Suffice to say, plenty of
ships firing are kick, so little time in actual battle is disappointing,
with any discussion of tactics, from what I can see, just techno-babel.

I fully understand that (not that I don't think that it was a fine thing
for you to point out). The point is, from my standpoint, that while yes,
it's an old, should-have-been-decomissioned ship, it makes for a less...
confrontational setting for the series.
I fully expect that this is going to be mostly about spying and sabatoge
with some running away thrown in. Perfectly justifiable, but will it be
*fun*?

Okay, I see where your coming from. You're probably right.

Of course, they consistently ran away in the original series as well, until
the Pegasus appeared. It's also good to note that to date, there are always
multiple base stars appearing when the Cylons jump in, and they seem to be
taking supplies and munitions reasonably seriously in the new show. It
doesn't do the Galactica any good to wax a couple of base stars and end up
unable to effectively fight any further. It's entirely possible that the
Galatica itself is more powerful than one (perhaps even two) basestars, but
that the situation to demonstrate that hasn't arrived. I fully expect to see
some major action down the line, and I'd be willing to bet that it's being
saved for a "end of the season" show/shows. It's also a fair bet that
sometime during this season that we'll see them find a way to get an advantage
on the Cylons in combat. It's really their only chance to survive.
The real questions is, will they do something like the Pegasus in this show?
ie. Will another, more advanced, battlestar appear (probably battled damaged
and also being chased) like they did in the original?

The Galactica gang get to kick some ass in episode 10. Meanwhile, Number
6 continues trying to lever Baltar over the edge. That one even has their
homage to Star Wars, but with attitude thrusters flaring (sounds like
Starbuck). They even do extensive tactical planning for the battle.
As an aside, I really like Number 6 as a character. Not as in someone I'd like
to meet, but she rounds out the cast of characters in several ways beyond what
shows in a publicity still.. For a former fashion model
with no real acting credits she's doing a fine job. Religion has never been so
seductive...

Personally (all entirely IMHO, YMMV etc of course....) I think the
new BSG is superb - probably the best written and acted Space Opera
TV I've seen aside from Firefly.....!
As several people have already mentioned, over here we've now seen
all episodes except the final one (coming up on Monday night -
yayy!!). While we'll probably never be lucky enough to get an SF TV series
that is "perfect" for us hardcore SF geeks, for my money this gets close
enough that I am happy to ignore the occasional "wha...?" moments.
Yes, there isn't a great deal of combat action overall (though there are a
couple of episodes that have a fair amount), but to my mind
that isn't the important thing about the series - the
characterisation, relationships, politics and religion are all FAR more
important to the narrative than blowing up spaceships. The religious twist of
monotheistic Cylons vs. polytheistic Humanity, and the implications of this in
the later storylines, is fascinating..... if this doesn't get renewed for a
second series it'll be as big a crime against intelligent television* as
Firefly getting canned!
* If that's not an oxymoron, of course.... ;-)
