In some cultures the copying of an idea is considered the ultimate compliment,
in the United States we call it intellectual property infringement... Phil P.

GDW has had a long history of borrowing elements from SF literature for its
traveller universe. I can say no doubt there were a lot of elements
taken from the CoDo/Mote universe. Again there is no real legal
challenge here, in the long run it encouraged books sales, no harm, no foul.
By the Way Jon, Jerry likes the "Full Thrust" underwear... Phil P.

I think Allan Goodall pretty much summed it up. Ideas are not copyright
protected. I am a resident of the USA myself as well as a software developer
and an artist, and I am well aware of intellectual property rights. If there
is justification as Allan mentioned with possible detrimental effects to your
business, action may be possible. In the case we are discussing, it is not.

I actually thought 1st edition Traveller predated SW by just a little, or at
least came out round about the same time (ie: too close to have started
development of an entire game after the film), but maybe that's just my memory
playing up.

BTW, I always assumed one of the major influences on Traveller was Poul
Anderson's Polesotechnic League series - the one single illustration in
the
original Traveller 3-book set WAS Nicholas Van Rijn, after all... :)
