I've been using Beth's suggestion: Use an plastic flight base, drill holes in
the shaft, and mount fighters on paperclip wire set into those holes.
It
looks really, really good, especially with my Sa'Vasku. The dice are currently
following them around the table, but I can live with that.

GW Mailorder had a sale last week, so I took the opportunity to pick up some
of their BFG fighters (along with some plastic jungle trees, which look
surprisingly good with a coat of green ink). I have to say, I was pleased.
The prices aren't all that bad -- $1.50 for four fighters -- and the
detail is really nice. They are molded with small bases, designed to fit into
the Epic infantry stands, but these could easily be snipped away. I especially
like the Gunboats. They have a nice, unique look to them. Frankly, I'll
probably buy a few more at some point in the future.
Along with the order, I got a copy of their mailorder magazine, which had
pictures of Imperial Transports (which look just like Imperial destroyers),
and the new Ork ships. The ork stuff is...okay, I guess. Not my cup of
tea.
This reminds me (as I ramble) of a question: Does anyone know if the new BFG
eldar ships are symmetrical, or do they only have the one sail sticking out of
their side. It's damned hard to tell from the pictures that I've seen

Along the same lines, I've made and cast a little fighter stand that fits on
top of a normal plastic flying base. It has three 'arms' on the end of which
you can mount your fighters and you could put a small (tiny) dice in the flat
central
disc (may need some blu-tak to keep it there)
For a picture, go to

and navigate to the spaceship models page - the fighter base is down at
the bottom of the page.

Heh. I *definitely* like the character of the old Space Fleet minis for
freighters. The Gothic is great, and the Castellan shield ship serves as a
great double for a medium freighter. No real reason for the freighters to have
the dippy prow....

Yeah, that's about my feelings on the matter, but some people like 'em.
Actually, there's one guy at the game store who is pretty die-hard
anti-GW... but absolutely *loves* the Ork ships. <shrug>

Whether or not they're symmetrical depends greatly on your pinning
and/or
gluing abilities. ^_- But yes, there are two lower wings on most Eldar
ships, and the other ships have just the top & bottom, nothing to the side.
I do like the new Eldar designs, though they're different enough from the old
that using them in the same fleet doesn't work well. So I guess I get
two fleets of different ships.... ^_^
Later,
Just out of curiousity do the Eldar ships look anything like like Minbari
ships? I'm always looking for alternative B5 figures. Thanks, Neil

Funny you should ask that, I just got three packs of frigates and destroyers.
Lessee...
First, the bases. Clear plastic, with stands of varying lengths (I do
this myself for effect). the bases are low, flat half-lenses. They're
different anyway. I like 'em.
Now the casting quality of the miniatures is a little lower than I expected.
There's more flash than I expect from GW, which isn't much. There isn't too
much, but it's noticeable. Mold lines are visible on flat areas and affect
nowhere that you can't use a file freely. Some extra lead is cast in with the
figure and will need to be removed with a blade as the joins are solid. This
material provides All of the sprue lead joins with flat areas that can be
filed smooth. All detail is deep, crisp and very well formed. Offhand, I can
say that the only better cast figs I can think of were from GHQ, and are also
more expensive I give 'em an 'A' on manufacture. Less work with a blade gets
them an A+.
The miniatures are designed as vertical fins with narrow hulls attached
forwards of the fin. The style is vary streamlined but with mechanical
patterning as detail rather than an organic look. They might pass for old
Minbari ships from the last war, or perhaps a minor Minbari allied race or use
them for your own designs. They'd look real funny next to a Shar'lin. The
frigates and destroyers are sized a bit smaller than an AoG Vor'chan. I expect
the cruisers will be better sized to mix into B5W. However, these small, cheap
ships (about $3 apiece) should fit in very well with the forthcoming Fleet
Action scale figures.

This must be a case of "great minds" thinking alike. I just did up a bunch of
fighters for Mark S.'s B5 game at GenCon. I used based from ICE's flight
stands, drilled three holes in them, mounted brass rods in the holes, and
glued the fighters on the ends of the brass rods. They turned out quite nice.
The rods are a little long, but that means the fighters will be on about the
same plane as a B5 ship, so they should do fine.

I've just got some of these, and I can recommend them -- at least as
far as possible for someone who hasn't actually mounted any fighters on one
yet. However, they do look the goods, and I don't anticipate any problems.
Later, someone was writing about the new Ork ships. Well, I don't intend to
get any myself, but I just thought I'd pass on what my elder son said when he
saw the kroozers:
[Sarcasm mode ON]
"Gee, they don't exactly resemble Terror Fish, do they?"
[Sarcasm mode OFF]
He has a point -- and we won't even mention the "terror ship".... <g>
So there you have it: the reason Orks can't spell is that they're descended
from Aquaphibians! <g>
