Subject: Battle Music

Greetings!

I have just seen an item that I have been waiting for: A boombox with an MP3
decoder. And my first thought was for background music for GZGECC with NO
REPEATS! I should be able to put many, many hours of music on a single CD.
Start it up at the beginning of the day and let it go.

I know that background music has been discussed on the
gzg-l list before. And I am NOT trying to start it back
up on that list. I am still in the process of trying to extract past
suggestions from the archives.

But for those interested in helping me with this project, I have set up a
Yahoo Group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/battlemusic .
I would appreciate your inputs posted to THAT list
(mailto:battlemusic@yahoogroups.com).
I have left the list open, so that non-members may
post to it and subscribe without a Yahoo ID.

I need some help. (yea, yea, yea.)

I am trying to put together background music for GZG-ECC.
I have a boombox that decodes mp3s, so I can fit about 10 hours of music on a
CD.

I would appreciate your input.

I would ESPECIALLY like to hear from people who are going to run a game at
GZGECC, so I can try to match a piece of music to thier game's timeslot.

For input, please visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/battlemusic/

Please help.

No can do, I'm not registered.

However, I can very strongly recommend

Gustav Holst's "Mars the Bringer of War"

Yeah, yeah, you've got that, I know.

But *emphasis added* make sure the version you have is the

_My_ preference is for instramental. But if someone
running a game wants a particular piece that has vocals, I am open to it
(again my preference is for
non-English/Spanish/French vocals, as vocals in
a language that you comprehend can be distracting).

I like both. I plan to use some Classical, New Age, Film, and Techno. I am
also considering some Opera, Native Peoples' music (Native American Flute,
Austrailian Aborigine music, etc.), and other selections.

Hmm, You might also want to consider the theme music CD to 'Gladiator'. Every
games shop I walk in to these days seems to be playing it. It was err...
'inspired' by the Planet Suite lets say.

If you can get hold of Apocalyptica, I recommend it: instrumental heavy metal
played on cellos. (Really.) There are MP3s out there if you want a sample.

I've certainly found that instrumental music is much better for
role-playing games than anything with lyrics, even if they're not
comprehensible to the players. Aliens soundtrack, Universal Soldier
soundtrack... action films of that period tend to be good.

Heh. I believe the chants were pulled directly from the movie-- I can
discern no difference whatsoever. I've looked around for Zulu chants like this
(iziGiyo), and can't find any, even after consulting with a few (random)
ethnomusicologists.

Zulu is truly a great movie. I snagged a military history mag the other day,
and a writer and the Editor listed it as one of the top ten war movies of all
time (one at #2, and one at #6).

"Father, why do they have those tiny spears?"

P.S.: Somewhat topical, my favorite wargaming music is the Conan the Barbarian
soundtrack scores by Basil Poledouris and Carl Orff's O Fortuna from Carmina
Burana (also used in CtB).

In the classical realm, try the "Mount St.Helens Symphony" by Hovaness. It's
got lots and lots of drums.

Bother! I thought that I set it up so it can be posted to without being
registered. Sorry.

I am trying to purchase everything that I am going to use. So as to stay
legal. Some things that I have collected are free off the web in the hope that
you will purchase albums. Some of them are good enough to tempt me.

Anyway if you would rather contact me off-list you are welcome to at the
address below.

I'll be running FT:CanAm (which is going to be an individual rather than team
event, this time). No particular music in mind for space combat, but for SG, I
don't think you can beat Basil Poledouris' music

Other good music tunes include game soundtracks.

Half Life, Shattered Steel, MechWarrior, and Unreal Tournament are the ones
that immediately come to mind.

I also have tracks from Homeworld, Battle Zone, and Incoming.

Sounds very nice! When I get home and functional again (home --
probably November 3rd sometime; functional and caught up with stuff at home,
like a month of paper mail the USPO has been
collecting for me -- who the hell knows?) I'll see if I can find
my lists of music I've been considering for Battle Themes... also, you can
search the archives or wait a little, I know I posted my "Senso" (War) mix
tapes a while back. (That was the first time Alan mentioned the Emerson, Lake
& Powell version; I'm about ready to order it online somewhere since I have
not
found it in a store at all.... ^_^; ) Anyway, I can sent that
to you (or the list...) again fairly easily. It's a mix of
movie music (some cues from Star Wars -- I start in the middle
of some tracks for better effect -- among other movies including
Crimson Tide and Das Boot), some Mechwarrior and (I think) Emperor of the
Fading Suns (both computer games), some classical (Mars, an older version used
Finlandia) and a good bit of anime
(Lodoss Wars, Miyu, Patlabor, Wings of Honneamise (Senso -- my
"title track" -- is from this movie) probably others but it's
been a while since I've looked).

Having been in Japan a while, I've picked up a few more anime CDs, including
the Lodoss Wars TV series CDs, which have some pretty good music on 'em
(though I definitely like the first better than the other two, for those who
have any idea what the heck I'm talking about, whereas the OVA CDs were all
quite good). So I have more additions to make to my list... as well
as a hopefully-fun idea for a game to run, though I seriously
doubt it will be this ECC.

I also have some... whatsits, S3M? files I remember saving for this purpose.
Basically upgrades from the old MOD files.

Anyway, I think that's about that for now....
