Subject: Bats Away! (really OT)
> In a message dated 98-06-29 20:18:21 EDT, Tom Sullivan writes: << It should be understood--its been several years since I read this tale, and I cannot remember the source, so it may well be apocryphal. Its such a good story that I cannot help but question its veracity, frankly. But if it isnt true: it should be. > [quoted text omitted] True - I've had it confirmed from several reputable scholarly-type real heavy books. The whole thing is screamingly funny, unless you happened to be one of the bats (carnivorous mice that fly - gotta love 'em). Now the one story that I want confirmed-or-denied is that late in the Ami involvement in Vietnam & neighboring states, around 1970-1, the CIA, or somebody, came up with the idea of filling a B-52s to payload capacity (40,000 kilos!) of Calgon, or some other detergent. This would then by dropped on the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the monsoon season. The rationale is, that since the bombed areas of the Trail were on dangerous, twisty mountain roads, the vehicles &/or people would slip in the suds & fall to their doom. Amazing what people can come up with when given carte blanche...
