...better yet, just head to your local hobby (not game) store and pick up some
thick sheet styrene. You can make as many bases as you'll ever need in
whatever shape you want.

I can think of two solutions...
1 - GW (there's a naughty word) does some 20mm x 40mm cavalry bases
which would probably accommodate your figures.
2 - You could use larger coins, or washers, which could be mounted
beneath the front and backside of the figure. I'd shy away from pressboard or
hardboard, if it's the cardboard like material I'm thinking of. I've found
these types of materials bend and flex far to easily, the corners get banged
up awfully quick.

i use it for all my figure bases. The thin stuff you can cut with sissors. I
also glue a metalic strip to the bottom of it as well an keep my armies in one
of those cheap metal tool boxes.
